Head Coach Steve Smith
On the outing of Trent Blank:
"He made some mistakes in the first three innings giving up hits on three 0-2 counts. The thing that was different about him tonight was that there was a different tone with him in terms of how he was dealing with (the game). I thought his confidence and presence was just remarkably better. I was really encouraged by the way that he threw. I thought we pitched well enough tonight to win on many nights. This just wasn't a great night for us offensively and we just didn't do enough to make it happen."
On the offensive effort:
"We had opportunities and in some cases just didn't have good at-bats. We need the middle of our order to be productive. We ran probably as young of a team as I think we will see out there this year. We had Able Baker making his first college start hitting in the six hole. You had a lot of young guys out there that just need to be patient and play hard. It is a very long season and there are going to be some ups and downs within the season."
On the BYU pitching staff:
"I don't think they did anything remarkably special other than just throw strikes and changing speeds. We have seen some tremendous arms here already this early in the year. I think they just located their stuff and didn't do anything special. We are playing in a park right now that is playing pretty big. We have had a breeze coming in most of the time. I think that is one reason why the homerun numbers are down. We have given up two homeruns right now through eight games and we have only hit two. I think a lot of that has to deal with the way that the wind is blowing."
On the youth of the team:
"There is no way to speed up the learning curve. There are some places in the country where it might be easier to play younger guys if you have a 10th man in the park. We don't have that. You are going to have to go out there and go head-to-head with the other guy and you are going to learn. Over time the better players will get a lot better. I think we have several of those and I think it is pretty obvious who they are."
Sophomore RHP Trent Blank
On his outing:
"I was just glad that I had a comfortable outing and got some innings in with my team working behind me."
On the seventh inning and hits down the line:
"That is baseball. Sometimes it goes your way and sometimes it doesn't. BYU is a good hitting ballclub so give them credit. I missed some spots and made some mistakes and BYU took advantage of them. I tried to throw strikes and limit the walks tonight."
