Head Coach Steve Smith
On today's games:
"I think our guys want to win every game. We got a very good pitching performance in game one and our defense backed him (Logan Verrett). We played well behind Logan (Verrett) today and got him some runs. In the second game, Trent Blank pitched well out of the bullpen for us. Willie (Kempf) didn't have his best stuff today, but he didn't get blown out. I thought we saw some pretty good things from our young guys offensively throughout the day. Chris Slater hit not just his first career home run, but his first and second career home runs in the same day. That's a guy who has really improved over the past two and a half years."
On Willie Kempf's performance:
"He was into the fourth inning and allowed eight hits, and runners were on second and third base. If I've ever been guilty of anything it's been for leaving guys in there too long. We have guys available right now. The starters need to understand, and they do, that if they're going to give up a bunch of runs, it better be in the first inning and they better start putting up zeroes after that, or we will have go get him. The guys coming out of the bullpen don't have a lot of room to work. They have to be good when they get in there. "
On changing around today's lineup:
"I feel like it gives us a better defensive lineup. It gives us better range at second (base). The interesting thing was to see Jake (Miller) play third (base). He is going to be a very good player. I'm really encouraged to see his demeanor defensively and how accurate his arm is. He's got a chance to be pretty special at third base. I've always thought Raynor's (Campbell) best spot was at second base and I think that's where he'll wind up playing when he gets out of here. Joey (Hainsfurther) did a good job of giving us some offense in the DH spot. "
Sophomore RHP Logan Verrett
On his performance:
"I felt good warming up in the bullpen. I did some really good stuff working with coach Smith in the bullpen this week. Coming out in the first inning and striking out the side felt really good and boosted my confidence a little bit."
On simplifying his approach:
"I basically just worked my fastball and slider and really simplified the game. Gregg (Glime) was calling pitches for me and he knew exactly what was going to get those guys out."
Sophomore RHP Trent Blank
On coming out of the bullpen:
"When I come in there I just want to attack the zone, let the defense work behind me and throw a lot of strikes. "
On how he felt on the mound:
"My stuff wasn't as good as it has been, but I am confident in the people behind me, and as long as I attack the zone I know that they're going to make the plays."
Junior OF Chris Slater
On first career home run:
"It's a great feeling just being able to contribute to the team and helping the team win."
On hitting an opposite field homerun:
"I'm definitely seeing the ball well and timing the ball well when I'm hitting the ball to all fields. It's a good thing when you're hitting the ball not only to left field but to right field as well."
