Baylor, Michigan State Postgame Quotes

Recap |  Box Score

Baylor Head Coach Steve Smith

Opening statement:

“There’s no shame in playing hard and losing, and I thought that’s what we did. I thought we played hard, and I think their starter, (David) Garner, really competed and threw well. We hit a couple of balls right at them and they turned double plays. When you’re making plays defensively, it’s a good feeling and it energizes your club. You can just as easily throw those away and it does the opposite, but that’s not what happened tonight. They made the plays."

On lack of well-hit balls in the game:

“There weren’t a lot of well-hit balls in the game by either side, but that’s just the way the game is now. They scored their first run drag bunting, and Cal (Towey) didn’t really have a play, so it becomes a hit and an error. I think (Brad) Kuntz winds up getting bored with his fastball, maybe trying to do too much, gives up a two-strike soft base hit to right field. The top two guys in their order are pretty salty. The top of their order is what you’ve got to be ready to pitch to, and I think we worked them, but we just didn’t get it done.”

On overall impressions from the bullpen tonight:

“We threw Austin Stone for the first time. I thought he looked very confident going out in the first inning. He made some quality pitches, but he really lost it there in the second inning very quickly. I think it’s very clear that Michael Howard is not ready to pitch. He looked like a position player trying to pitch, and that’s probably because we’ve played him as much as we have. He hasn’t had much work on the mound, but there’s way more inside of him than what we saw tonight, and we’ve got to do something different with him to get him ready. Brad (Kuntz) did a good job, he’s a competitor, he’s a bulldog, and he’ll give you everything he’s got.”

Baylor Outfielder Logan Vick

On tonight’s performance:

“I thought we competed very well tonight. We had a lot of energy. They played very well today. They had solid defense, and their pitchers did a great job of locating and kept us off balance. You’ve got to give credit where credit is due, and today is just one of those days where you have to tip your hat to the other team.”

On the effectiveness of Michigan State’s pitching staff:

“They did a good job of pitching backwards. In fastball counts they were throwing off-speed, so they just did a good job of keeping us off balance and keeping us guessing. They were locating their pitches very well tonight and keeping them low, so it’s kind of hard to get your pitch.”
