Recap |  Box Score

Baylor Coach Steve Smith

On the game:

“Anytime that you don’t have errors and they have more runs than they have hits; there are not many ways you can do that except getting some real timely hits. The difference in this game was a few walks on our side. They didn’t have a walk until the 9th inning when (Travis) Starling came into the game. I thought Kendal (Volz) was struggling early in the game with his command and that is usually his game. After that he got pretty good. The triple to right in the 7th inning was more of a wind-aided triple much like (Adam) Hornung’s homerun. The only place the ball was carrying tonight was in right field. Kendal’s stuff was good late but they were able to get that jam up in the middle in the 7th inning that scored two runs.”

On Brooks Raley:

“I thought he was great. I thought he pitched really well. He had three solid pitches and he threw a lot of strikes. He doesn’t mess around on the mound. There is not anything not to like about him as a pitcher and a competitor. The league is full of guys like that though. There are a bunch of guys in the league this year that are very capable. The teams that can do the best job of adjusting and putting pitches in play will have their chances of winning go up. It is important not to strikeout because here is nothing good that can happen for you when you strikeout. That is the thing that we are going to have to do a better job of against good pitching.”

On the conference schedule:

“This is a long season. They have a good club and we have a good club. The league is really talented this year and it makes for a lot of fun.”

 Baylor Pitcher Kendal Volz

On the game:

“They had two runs in the 2nd inning and two runs in the 7th inning and when you face a good club you can’t have those innings. In the 7th inning they had a jammed shot up the middle but that is the way the ball goes sometimes. We have to do a better job filling up the strike zone. It took me a little while to get comfortable tonight. You can’t let the little things happen in this type of a game.”

On Texas A&M and the Big 12:

“I think almost every game is going to be like this in conference this year. They have good arms up and down their lineups and good hitters at the plate. There are going to be close games this year and tonight things just went their way. We just have to put it behind us and move on.”

On finding his command:

“It took me a while. I was kind of slipping at the beginning and my mechanics were a little bit off. I figured it out and was cruising for a while before the 7th inning when things just fell their way.”
