HOUSTON - Baylor junior right-hander Dillon Newman was nearly flawless in a seven-inning one-hitter against New Orleans in a 10-0 win at Houston's Cougar Field on Friday afternoon.

Giving BU its first one-hitter since Logan Verrett did so on March 11, 2011 in Waco against Louisiana Tech, Newman allowed just two base runners and both were eliminated on double plays as he faced the minimum 21 hitters in seven innings. He allowed a one-out walk to Zach Pohto in the first and a one-out single to Reese Kanter in the second. After that, Newman retired the final 16 hitters he faced, which impressively enough, were three shy of the 19 straight he retired in his last outing.

"Dillon did a good job of making pitches, executing pitches," said BU Head Coach Steve Smith. "We made a few plays behind him. He commanded the game and we were exceptional defensively. They are pretty aggressive. They are swinging. But nonetheless, he's throwing the ball in the strike zone with multiple pitches. I think this is an even more difficult ball park to pitch in than ours, especially with the wind blowing out to left. He had to be pretty good today and he was."

Improving to 3-0 with the win, Newman's final line on the day was seven innings, one hit and walk given up, and six strikeouts as 47 of his 69 pitches were strikes. In his five starts this season, he has given up three runs or less each time and has a minimal 1.42 ERA.

In support of Newman's outstanding effort, the BU offense didn't get going until the fourth inning. Missing out on a bases-loaded, one-out chance in the second, the Bears got going on a two-out RBI bloop-single by Nate Goodwin in the fourth. In the fifth, Baylor broke the game open with four runs on a Nathan Orf RBI fielder's choice, Cal Towey RBI double and Grayson Porter two-run homer. Porter tallied his first career three-hit day and his long ball gave him his second this season and of his career, and second in his last four games.

Jake Miller took advantage of the gusts to left in the sixth as he launched a high fly ball over the left field fence to make it a 6-0 lead. The homer was his first of the season and seventh of his career.

"I thought the left-hander that started for them was pretty good - what I call effectively wild," Smith said. "Honestly, he dodged some bullets but I thought we took some good swings off him. Eventually we got some balls to go through and got some out of the park."

Baylor ended the game by run rule in the seventh with four more runs. Steve DalPorto started the scoring with an RBI double off the left field wall and Goodwin achieved his first career three-RBI game with a two-run double down the left field line. Following a Miller bunt single, Goodwin scored the game-ending run on a wild pitch.

UNO starter Stone Speer (1-4) took the loss, allowing eight runs on nine hits and five walks with three strikeouts in six innings.

Baylor completes its weekend in Houston with a doubleheader tomorrow as the Bears face New Orleans again at 2 p.m. CT and Houston at 6:30 p.m. BU RHP Austin Stone (0-2, 7.20 ERA) will throw against UNO, while RHP Max Garner (1-2, 2.86 ERA) will match up against UH's Austin Pruitt (3-1, 2.51 ERA).
