Head Coach Steve Smith:
On Texas' 7-run third inning:
"We couldn't put anybody away. I don't know how many two-strike counts Kendall had, but he had several, and he just could not make a quality pitch in that count. He made lots of mistakes and they did a good job of hitting his mistakes.
"We got off to an emotional high like we did yesterday, and when we get off to a good start, we need to back it up with good pitching and defense. It can be very discouraging to an offense when they're scrambling for runs and they get some, and then have to stand out there on the field for such a long time. I'm sure they felt like that was a lot more runs than what it really was."
On Alaniz's pitching:
"He responded to the runs they gave him. There's no doubt about that. He was shaky early with command, he wasn't throwing his breaking ball for strikes. He's an experienced, veteran guy. I really thought that this game more than any other we've played this year, showed the difference in experience, particularly on the mound."
Baylor RHP Kendall Volz:
On giving up seven runs with two outs in the third inning:
"They put some hits together and got some free bases. It's hard to win when they do that. I was just trying to throw strikes and get the ball put in play where we could get an out. It didn't work out, but I think we all got better from it.
"There's not too much I can do about it now. Just learn from it and come back and do better the next time."
