Head Coach Steve Smith
On today's game:
"Today was just a great example of a team being both lucky and good. We played well, but clearly we got a huge break there in the 8th inning and the top of the 9th. That's the only way you can describe that. That's baseball. That's why you play a bunch of games."
On the successful hit-and-run in the 5th inning:
"I don't consider those types of things breaks. We executed and played pretty well. Jake (Miller) had a couple of tough chances early in the game. He's been unbelievably good at third base. I think he was actually at the spot in the game where he could drive in the winning run. He's so been so good defensively but today just wasn't one of his better days. I thought (Cal) Towey's base-running decision in the 8th inning, that's just such a heady play. The park is different this year with the screens in front of the dugouts. In years past, that ball is in the dugout and it's a dead ball and you get second base. This year, you play it live off of that, so he couldn't hesitate. It was a great gamble and a great time to be aggressive. It gave Miller a great chance to drive him in."
On Chris Slater's RBI triple:
"That's another opportunity there. There was one out, and if you can get to third base with one out and get (Max) Muncy to the plate then you've got a chance. Max doesn't have to get a hit. He hits a lot of fly balls. That's just making a great decision and being talented enough to make it happen. It was a great decision at that point in the game."
Junior RHP Brooks Pinckard
On picking up his second win of the season:
"It was a great team effort today, especially to end the ballgame when Jake (Miller) got the game-winning hit. That was big time. Cal (Towey) getting on and getting to second base was huge and Jake with the big time hit."
On the deflection in the 8th inning:
"(The ball) actually deflected off my ankle. It's got a little bruise. I had no idea where it was going, but all of the sudden I heard fans cheering and we were running off the field. I guess (Max) Muncy just caught the ball and stepped on the bag."
Senior OF Chris Slater
On his RBI triple:
"I was just thinking `get out of the box and make a good turn.' I came up going to second and saw that it came off the fence so I knew there was one out and getting to third base would be big. I knew it would take a lot of pressure off of Max (Muncy) to score the run there. I figured it was a good time to take a chance with one out and fortunately it paid off."
On the 5th inning rally:
"Hitting is kind of contagious. It's one of those things where you see the guy in front of you do it and you know you can do it as well. It kind of becomes a mental thing. Everybody is just going out there with a lot of confidence."
