Coach Steve Smith

On getting hits early and often

“We took a lot of good swings really I thought throughout the game. Obviously at the start of the game we got wind blowing out and we got a pretty soft thrower on the mound, sometimes that gives us fits, but it didn’t tonight. Guys stayed on their feet well and we just took a lot of good swings.”

On Shaver Hansen

“Shaver has got a chance to be a very, very good player. We are not going to see the best of Shaver Hansen in his career here. I think he has got a lot of baseball in front of him. He has got some defensive skills. He has got a little extra in his bat. Last night the ball he hit out, he just really went down and got around and hooked it. The ball just seems to carry off his bat. He is playing well. He is picking us up big time at shortstop. That has been a place that has been a little bit of an issue for us since the beginning of the year. We finally have got him there, knowing that he can play it, but we also know how well he plays third. (He is a) very, very solid player.”

On Jon Ringenberg’s pitching performance

“The thing that has really improved with Jon is just his velocity. Jon was throwing tonight on two days rest. What is encouraging is the way he is rebounding. You know at the beginning of the year if I threw him at all, I would need to wait about six or seven days to throw him again. He just could not recover. It wasn’t number of pitches, it was just if got up on the mound and threw. I think he has gotten past that and it was really good to see him go out there and have the velocity he had in just the two days (rest). The number of pitches was about right. He threw just about the same number of pitches tonight as he did on Sunday. (He) threw a lot of strikes, got his change-up up early with that guy hitting that double down the line. It was a two strike change, he left up, but I was just encouraged to see him bounce back and be as strong as he was on just a couple of days.”

Junior Shaver Hansen

On his recent hitting success

“You have a good approach in BP and working the other way. (I have) been staying inside balls, but I feel good right now. My swing feels good. I am seeing the ball well, so I’ll take advantage of it while I can.“

On Baylor’s big first inning

“We needed to after yesterday’s game. You know we started slow, didn’t swing the bats real well and we came out here and knew we needed to jump on them early. They got a guy in scoring position first inning, so they were ready when they first came and we were ready when we first got to hit. It turned out in our favor in this game, but this weekend we got a big series against Kansas that we got to be prepared for.”

On bouncing back from yesterday’s loss

“Texas State is a good team. We are not taking away anything from them. A loss is a loss. You are going to have those throughout the season, but at our home field we want to try to defend our turf and win those mid-week games, so yesterday’s loss hurt. We knew we needed to come out today and really get the bats going and that’s what we did.“
