WACO, Texas - Kevin Sevigny, Michael Griffin and Kyle Reynolds all provided home runs as No. 15 Baylor defeated Kansas State 8-4 in Sunday's Big 12 Conference series finale at Baylor Ballpark. With the win, Baylor (22-12, 9-3) completes the series sweep against Kansas State (15-15, 2-10).

 


 

 

The Bears have won all 15 meetings with Kansas State in Waco as Big 12 foes and 23 of 28 overall meetings since the league's inception in 1997. Baylor also has won 12 of its last 13 Big 12 home games.

 

Baylor got the offense going early as three consecutive two-out singles by Josh Ford, Zach Dillon and Reid Brees produced a run in the bottom of the first. Sevigny stretched the lead to 2-0 with a solo homer to left in the second.

 

Kansas State cut the lead by a run in the fourth when Brandon Farr hit a solo round-tripper to left. However, the Bears answered with two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to pull away. Griffin provided the fifth-inning runs, following a Paul Witt single and stolen base with a homer down the line in left. Chase Gerdes had an RBI single in the sixth, and two batters later Witt plated two runs with a double off the leftfield wall.

 

The Wildcats scratched for single runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, but could do no more damage. Kyle Reynolds capped Baylor's scoring with a solo home run down the line in right.

 

Cory VanAllen (6-2) earned the victory for the Bears, allowing one run on five hits and no walks with two strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Abe Woody pitched the final 3.0 innings to earn his seventh save of the season.

 

Adam Cowart (6-2) suffered the loss for K-State, yielding seven runs on 10 hits and a walk with two strikeouts over 6.0 innings.

 

Baylor returns to action Tuesday, traveling to Arlington, Texas, for a 7 p.m. CDT game at Texas-Arlington. The Bears dropped a 9-6 decision to UTA at Baylor Ballpark in mid February.

 

NOTES: Baylor leads the all-time series with Kansas State 24-6, including a 16-1 advantage in games played in Waco. The Bears hold a 23-5 advantage in the series as Big 12 foes. ...
