Coach Steve Smith

On becoming the winningest coach in Baylor Baseball history :

“It is absolutely special to be the winningest head coach in Baylor Baseball history. It’s absolutely special to be right next to Mickey in the record book. It was not something that I ever thought about or set out to do, but if you stay with something long enough, these kinds of records are records of perseverance and longevity. For that I’m proud.”

On continuing the win streak:

“The guys are just doing what we’ve talked about a lot of times after these games. They’re just taking them one game at a time. They’ve been motivated since August, and it continues to be that way today.”

On the way this team approaches the game:

“I’m enjoying it a lot. As a coach, when you know your guys are prepared and you know they’re hooked up and locked in, then you can deal with their mistakes and their shortcomings much better. I don’t know that I ever thought I would coach long enough to get to the place where you have a team that really puts you at ease. This one has done that.”

 Third Baseman Cal Towey

On his plate approach:

“It feels really good when you’re able to put it in left center. That lefty kept coming in on me. That first at bat he jammed me and got me to hit a weak fly ball to right.”

On possibility of setting the program record for consecutive games won:

“It’s cool to do, but it’s better to just keep winning games. This weekend will be a lot of fun. It’s going to be a challenge.”

Pitcher Austin Stone

On how much fun the team is having right now:

“It’s a blast. We come out every day and compete. Every day is the next step, and we just have fun every time.”

On pitching with a four run lead to start the game:

“My confidence is way up there. You come out with a four run lead and you can just breathe a little bit.”
