Head Coach Steve Smith
On the game:
"I didn't feel like we lost this game by an inch. I think they outcompeted us at the plate and on the mound. I thought Craig pitched well and I thought Willie (Kempf) competed well. We just didn't do enough offensively to make much of a game out of this. We left 13 guys on base. We had a big opportunity early and we didn't cash in. We had other opportunities as the game progressed. I can think of two times that we went to the plate with runners in scoring position and we struck out on three pitches. They beat us today. They outperformed us. Every game is a new game and I don't really think we showed up or played very well today."
On starting Craig Fritsch:
"It's about what is in the best interest of your team. When he was in the bullpen he was really good and had a string of scoreless innings. Now, we weaken our bullpen because we take him and put him on the mound for the start. He wasn't as dominant out there as a starter as he was out of the bullpen. We are at a situation now, on a game-by-game basis, where you try to put your team in the best position to win. That is all it is."
On the Sunday starter:
"We will go with Shawn (Tolleson) tomorrow. Had we got this game back to a save situation today, Shawn would have pitched today and I really don't know who we would have started tomorrow. I wasn't going to throw Brooks (Pinckard) today (to close the game), I was going to use Shawn. Since we didn't do that, we will start Shawn and just go from there."
On bouncing back from a loss:
"The thing I don't like is that we don't bounce back well from wins. They will bounce back from defeat. The thing that you have to do at this level of the game is that you have to play consistently well. You can't get happy about one at-bat or one really good day. You have to show up and play every day. The season will determine who is good, not a game. Every game is part of that season."
Freshman OF Logan Vick:
On the game
"It's disappointing but we have to come out and get the series. We can't take tomorrow lightly. We have to put this game past us. It is over with and we can't go back. We have to look forward to tomorrow and work had to get those timely hits."
On stranding 13 runners on nine hits:
"We are getting hits. We just have to get the timely hits and that is what we are not doing right now. We just have to get people to step up and get those hits when we have people on base."
On Nebraska RHP Tyler Niederklein:
"He did a good job. He was staying away from our hitters and we finally made an adjustment by crowding the plate so that we could pull the ball and hit something back up the middle. Once we did that, they pulled him."
Junior RHP Craig Fritsch
On his performance:
"I'm battling some back tightness right now, and I was able to get rid of it at the end. That first inning I left one up and in, and with this wind he was able to take it out. I felt looser at the end of the game, though."
On the chance to take the series on Sunday:
"It's pretty disappointing. We needed a sweep bad. But you've got to look at the next-best thing, which is taking two out of three. We've got to go for that tomorrow."
On the offensive production:
"We talked about that yesterday. We had the same hits as them or maybe more, and I think we doubled their hits, and we barely beat them by one. I feel like we just need to get back to getting those timely hits."
