WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball will host the third-annual Meet the Team dinner on Tuesday, Feb. 8 in the Galloway Suite at Floyd Casey Stadium. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. CST, and the festivities are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. A limited number of tickets are available for $30. Former Baylor and current Tampa Bay Rays catcher Kelly Shoppach will be the guest of honor. Shoppach played at Baylor from 1999 through 2001, earning unanimous first-team All-America honors in 2001. In his final season at Baylor, Shoppach hit .397 with 20 doubles, 12 home runs and 69 RBI, won the inaugural Johnny Bench Award as the nation’s top collegiate catcher and was named Big 12 Conference Player of the Year. He also had a 28-game hitting streak, which was the second-longest all-time at Baylor.

Shoppach was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the second round of the 2011 MLB Draft. He worked his way through the minors and made his Major League debut with the Red Sox in 2005, playing in nine games. That offseason, Shoppach was traded to the Cleveland Indians, where he would spend the next four seasons. In four years with Cleveland, Shoppach hit .245 with 60 doubles, 43 home runs and 141 RBI in 301 games.

Prior to the 2010 season, Shoppach was traded to his current team, the Tampa Bay Rays, where he played in 63 games a season ago.

Baylor returns 19 lettermen from a 2010 squad that finished 36-24 and lost in the championship round at the NCAA Fort Worth Regional. The Bears welcome back eight position starters, as well as 11 of 15 pitchers.

Senior infielder Landis Ware (.275, 6 HR, 38 RBI in 2010), junior RHP Logan Verrett (5-3, 3.28 ERA, 97 K) and junior OF/RHP Brooks Pinckard (.305, 12 2B, 6 3B, 18 SB; 2-4, 2.45 ERA, 12 SV) have been named team captains for the upcoming season.
