Bears Ranked 24th in Preseason Coaches Poll

WACO, Texas -- Baylor baseball was ranked 24th in the USA Today/ESPN Preseason Coaches Poll, released Friday. The Bears are one of four Big 12 Conference teams in the preseason rankings.

 

Rice, which garnered 22 of 31 first-place votes, opens the season as the nation's top-ranked team, followed by Clemson, Miami, Fla., South Carolina, North Carolina, Texas, Arkansas, Cal State Fullerton, Virginia and Vanderbilt. Clemson received four first-place votes, as did 15th-ranked and defending national champion Oregon State; Texas received the final first-place vote.

 

Other Big 12 schools in the preseason poll were 12th-ranked Nebraska and 23rd-ranked Oklahoma State.

 

Baylor plays 14 games this season against six teams ranked in the preseason coaches' poll. Along with three games each against Big 12 foes Nebraska, Oklahoma State and Texas, the Bears face No. 1 Rice twice, 10th-ranked Vanderbilt once and 22nd-ranked TCU twice.

 

Eight Baylor 2007 opponents were listed in among teams also receiving votes for the Top 25: Oklahoma, Winthrop, Oral Roberts, Houston, Mississippi State, Missouri, San Francisco and San Diego State.

 

Baylor opens its 2007 season Feb. 9-11 at the Minute Maid Park College Classic. The Bears face Houston at 7 p.m. Friday, Rice at 7 p.m. Saturday and Vanderbilt at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
