- Baylor baseball freshman outfielder Darryn Sheppard
was named Big 12 Co-Newcomer of the Week, the league announced Monday. In his first collegiate weekend, Sheppard led the Bears (1-2) in batting average, hits and tied for the lead in RBI in a three-game series at No. 19 Arizona State (2-1).
Sharing the honor with Kansas' Aaron Hernandez, the Sugar Land, Texas, native had at least one hit in all three games for Baylor at ASU as he went 5-for-13 (.385) with three RBI, two runs scored and hit his first career home run. In his first game on Friday, he helped BU to a season-opening win by going 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. In his second game on Saturday, he was 2-for-4 with a solo home run. In Sunday's series finale, he was 1-for-4.
Sheppard is the first Baylor player to ever win the honor in the first weekend of a season. He's only the fourth player to earn the award as BU's previous winners are Adam Toth (April 2-8, 2012), Michael Howard (April 9-15, 2012) and Nathan Orf (April 16-22, 2012).
Sheppard and Co. host UT Arlington tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. CT in the Bears' home opener at Baylor Ballpark.
