WACO, Texas - Baylor baseball opens its 2013 home schedule on Tuesday as the Bears welcome Texas State to Baylor Ballpark for a 6:35 p.m. CT first pitch. Baylor leads the all-time series over the Bobcats 46-18 and 34-14 in Waco.
The Bears, who received votes in the February 18th NCBWA Top 30 Poll, won the last meeting on February 22, 2012 in Round Rock at The Dell Diamond with a 5-1 victory. The game marked the first neutral site contest of the series, which dates all the way back to 1919.

In the last meeting, BU won the series' first neutral site game last season on Feb. 22 in a 5-1 decision at The Dell Diamond in Round Rock. The series between the two teams dates all the way back to 1919.

Baylor is 201-75 against teams that are current members of the Western Athletic Conference. The Bears own a winning record over all five teams they have played from the WAC: UT Arlington (78-29), Texas State (46-18), Dallas Baptist (41-21), UT San Antonio (28-4) and Louisiana Tech (8-3).

Baylor entered the season ranked 23rd in USA Today/ESPN Preseason Coaches' Poll and 27th in NCBWA Preseason Poll. Four Big 12 teams were ranked in at least one of the four national preseason polls. League newcomer TCU was ranked as high as No. 12 (USA Today Coaches' Poll) while Oklahoma's highest spot was No. 14 (Collegiate Baseball). Baylor was also ranked with a No. 23 spot on the USA Today list while Texas was ranked No. 21 by Collegiate Baseball. The USA Today Coaches' Poll had five league teams ranked or receiving votes - TCU (No. 12), Oklahoma (No. 16), Baylor (No. 23), and Oklahoma State and Texas received votes.
BIG 12 COACHES PICK BAYLOR FOURTH IN PRESEASON POLL
Baylor baseball was picked fourth in the Big 12 Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll for the third straight year. It's the 14th time in the last 15 seasons Baylor has been picked to finish in the conference's top half. Oklahoma was the preseason favorite for the second time in league history. For the 11th time in 16 seasons the preseason favorite did not win the regular season title in 2012. Baylor was the only Big 12 team not to finish within one spot of where it was picked in the preseason poll.

BEARS IN SEASON OPENERS
Baylor is 11-8 now in season openers under head coach Steve Smith, including wins in four of the last six seasons (Purdue in 2008, Pacific in 2009, Duke in 2010 and Oral Roberts in 2012). The Bears are 6-4 in their last nine season openers after dropping four straight from 2001 to 2004. Baylor is 4-4 when opening the season away from Baylor Ballpark in Smith's 18-year tenure.
GARNER NAMED TO NCBWA STOPPER OF THE YEAR WATCH LIST
Baylor senior RHP Max Garner was named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Preseason Watch List on Feb. 7. Garner is one of 75 players on the initial watch list for the ninth annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball. Garner earned 2012 first-team All-Big 12 honors from league's coaches as relief pitcher after leading the Big 12 with 10 saves, despite not recording first save until team's 30th game of season. His 10 saves tied for seventh-most saves in a single season in Baylor history. Garner is the fifth pitcher in program history to lead team in saves outright in two consecutive seasons and the first Baylor pitcher to ever lead a conference in saves outright.
