BAYLOR SUCCEEDING IN HOME OPENERS UNDER SMITH
Baylor is 14-5 in home openers under head coach Steve Smith and has won seven of its last eight. The lone loss in the stretch came to Oral Roberts on Feb. 18, 2011, but the Bears bounced back to win the next two games and take the series. Last season, the Bears defeated Texas State 6-3 on Feb. 19, 2013. BU's other home opening wins since 2006 include triumphs over Oral Roberts in 2012, Duke in 2010, Pacific in 2009, Purdue in 2008, Texas State in 2007 and Stephen F. Austin in 2006.
BAYLOR LEADS SERIES VS UT ARLINGTON
In a series that dates back to 1973, Baylor leads UT Arlington 82-30 overall in the all-time series and 50-12 in Waco. Under Smith, the Bears are 36-10 against UTA and have won four straight. The teams met twice last season as BU won in Waco and in Arlington. On April 9, 2013, Baylor won 14-4 at Baylor Ballpark. The Mavericks jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three runs in the second inning before the Bears responded with seven in the sixth, five in the seventh and two in the eighth to cruise to victory with 21 hits. On April 30, 2013, Baylor won 6-4 in Arlington. The Bears again overcame an early deficit after trailing 2-0 in the first inning. BU knotted the game with two runs in the third, one run in the fourth and sixth and two more in the eighth that proved to be valuable insurance runs as UTA scored a pair in the bottom of the ninth.
BAYLOR COMES FROM BEHIND TO WIN 2014 OPENER AT NO. 19 ARIZONA STATE
Trailing 7-2 entering the eighth inning on Friday at No. 19 Arizona State in both teams' season opener, the Bears scored three runs in the eighth and four in the ninth to improve 12-8 in season openers under Smith with its fifth win in its last seven tries. Grayson Porter delivered the tying runs on a two-run homer run on a 3-0 count in the ninth. Duncan Wendel then singled to right field with two runners aboard and an error by ASU's right fielder allowed the go-ahead run to score. The win also moved BU to 4-5 when opening a season on the road and upped the Bears to 18-12 in TV games since 2012, marking BU's debut on the Pac-12 Network.
Darryn Sheppard NAMED BIG 12 CO-NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK
Freshman outfielder Darryn Sheppard was named Big 12 Co-Newcomer of the Week, the league announced Monday. In his first collegiate weekend, Sheppard led the Bears in batting average, hits and tied for the lead in RBI in a three-game series at No. 19 Arizona State.
Sharing the honor with Kansas' Aaron Hernandez, the Sugar Land, Texas, native had at least one hit in all three games for Baylor at ASU as he went 5-for-13 (.385) with three RBI, two runs scored and hit his first career home run. In his first game on Friday, he helped BU to a season-opening win by going 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. In his second game on Saturday, he was 2-for-4 with a solo home run. In Sunday's series finale, he was 1-for-4.
Sheppard is the first Baylor player to ever win the honor in the first weekend of a season. He's only the fourth player to earn the award as BU's previous winners are Adam Toth (April 2-8, 2012), Michael Howard (April 9-15, 2012) and Nathan Orf (April 16-22, 2012).
