WACO, Texas– Baylor baseball resumes play this weekend with a road trip to San Diego to play four games in three days at the University of San Diego's Fowler Park. BU will play on Friday vs. California at 1 p.m. CT and vs. San Diego at 5 p.m. The Bears then face San Diego again on Saturday at 9 p.m. and close on Sunday against UNC Wilmington at 1 p.m.

After having both midweek games postponed this week, Baylor has not played since sweeping Austin Peay at Baylor Ballpark last weekend to win its fourth straight game. The only opponent BU has faced before is California, and the Bears trail that series 3-2. It will be the first time Baylor has ever faced San Diego and UNC Wilmington.

All Baylor baseball games are broadcast live on Waco's 1660 ESPN Radio. Tom Barfield provides the play-by-play with Lark Smith adding color commentary. Live streaming audio and GameTracker also are available for all Baylor baseball games online at www.BaylorBears.com, the official website of Baylor Athletics and a member of the CBS College Sports Network.

BAYLOR FACES UNFAMILIAR FOES IN SAN DIEGO
Baylor has a combined record of 2-3 against its three opponents in San Diego this weekend. Those five games all came against California as BU has never faced San Diego and UNC Wilmington. The Baylor-California series dates back to the teams' first meeting on May 24, 1991, which was an 8-3 Cal win in the NCAA Midwest Regional in Wichita, Kan. The teams then didn't meet again until the 2011 NCAA Houston Regional as Baylor won 6-4 on June 3, 2011, before losing 8-0 on June 5, 2011, and 9-8 on June 6, 2011, to end the Bears' 2011 postseason run. The teams' last meeting was on March 1, 2013, at the Astros College Classic in Houston at Minute Maid Park as BU cruised to a 9-0 win.

BAYLOR HEAD COACH Steve Smith EARNS 700TH CAREER WIN
Baylor head coach Steve Smith earned his 700th career win Feb. 23 vs. Austin Peay with a 12-1 decision in seven innings. The milestone win made Smith the 36th active coach in NCAA Division I baseball with 700 or more wins. He's Baylor's all-time wins leader in all sports. Of Baylor's all-time 18 NCAA Regionals, five conference championships, four Super Regionals and three College World Series appearances, only five Regionals, two conference titles and two CWS appearances have been accomplished without Smith at the helm. His career 700-462-1 record and .602 winning percentage have him ranked in the top 50 of active coaches with at least five years experience as a head coach in NCAA Division I baseball.

BAYLOR SETS NEW HBP MARK FOR ONE INNING
Baylor set a program record for HBPs in one inning Feb. 23 vs. Austin Peay as five batters were hit in the fifth inning (four in a row). The previous record was four vs. Kansas State on April 10, 2005. In the inning, BU scored seven runs on just one hit as there were five HBPs, two errors, a walk and wild pitch.

BAYLOR'S HEART OF THE ORDER PRODUCING
Baylor's 2-3-4 hitters Lawton Langford, Darryn Sheppard and Grayson Porter have gotten off to a good start as all three have reached base in each of the team's first seven games. Langford (14) and Porter (career-high nine) have on-base streaks that date back to the end of 2013. Through the first seven games, the trio has combined to go 22-for-69 (.319) with 24 runs, two doubles, a triple, three homers, 18 RBI, 35 total bases, 16 walks and three stolen bases.

BAYLOR KEEPS UP SUCCESS VS. OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE
In the teams' first-ever series, Baylor took a 3-0 lead in the all-time series against Austin Peay and improved to 5-0 all-time against teams currently part of the Ohio Valley Conference. BU's two results are a 7-3 win over Eastern Illinois on May 28, 1999, in the NCAA Waco Regional and a 7-6 win over Murray State on May 30, 2003, in the NCAA Hattiesburg Regional.

BAYLOR'S ROTATION ENJOYS STELLAR WEEKEND VS. AUSTIN PEAY
During Baylor's 3-0 series sweep of Austin Peay last weekend, the team's three starting pitchers -- Dillon Newman, Brad Kuntz and Austin Stone -- all performed very well as they went 3-0 with a 1.06 ERA while allowing just four runs (two earned) on eight hits and four walks with 21 strikeouts in 17.0 innings, and held APSU to a .136 batting average against.

Newman set a career-high with nine strikeouts, breaking his record of eight vs. California on March 1, 2013, in getting his first win of the season last Friday. He threw six innings while allowing two runs on four hits and two walks. After missing all of the 2013 season to injury, Kuntz was back in the groove in his second start of the year last Saturday. Not only did he set career-highs of six innings pitched and seven strikeouts, he retired APSU in order in every inning but the third. The one unearned run he gave up in the third proved to be insignificant as the Bears were already up 4-0 at the time. In getting his first win since April 18, 2012, vs. Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Kuntz gave up just two hits and a walk. It marked the third time in Kuntz's career he's had a five-plus-inning start while giving up two or fewer hits. Stone picked up his first win of the season by throwing five innings while allowing an unearned run on two hits and a walk with five strikeouts last Sunday.

BAYLOR FINDS EARLY SUCCESS IN NEW CLOSER Josh Michalec
Senior RHP Josh Michalec picked up two more saves in the week to make him a perfect 3-for-3 in career save chances. In 3.1 innings of work thus far, he has allowed just a hit and walk with four strikeouts. His saves have come on Feb. 14 in the season opener at Arizona State, Feb. 18 in the home opener vs. UT Arlington and Feb. 21 in the series opener vs. Austin Peay. Last season, Michalec posted a 4-5 record and 2.64 ERA out of the bullpen as his 22 appearances covered 47.2 innings. He allowed 17 runs (14 earned) on 37 hits and 19 walks with 36 strikeouts. Prior to the 2013 season, Michalec had combined to throw 5.1 innings in his first two seasons with Baylor.
