IRVING, Texas - Baylor baseball starting pitcher Austin Stone was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Monday. The Bears are now the first-ever Big 12 school to win the honor in three straight weeks.
First, it was closer Josh Michalec that was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week on March 10. Then, it was Dillon Newman on March 17. Now, Stone follows suit to earn the honor for the first time in his career. BU's three pitcher of the week winners mark the most it has had in a season since garnering six in 2005 and are tied for the second-most in single season program history (2000, 1999).
The junior Port Neches, Texas, native was phenomenal in a three-hitter win vs. No. 20 Oklahoma State last Saturday as he turned in Baylor's first nine-inning start since Max Garner vs. Illinois on March 9, 2013, and first complete game win since Josh Turley at Kansas State on April 13, 2012. With his first career complete game Stone had a season-high seven strikeouts while allowing just three hits and an unearned run to clinch the Bears' second straight Big 12 series win and third straight series win against a ranked team.
In his last three starts, Stone is 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA (allowed three unearned runs), 10 hits given up and seven walks given up with 14 strikeouts in 20.2 innings. The two wins have come against No. 3 Cal State Fullerton and No. 20 Oklahoma State. Overall, Stone is 3-1 on the season with a 0.97 ERA as he's allowed nine runs (four earned) on 21 hits and 13 walks with 24 strikeouts in 37.0 innings while keeping opponents to a .162 batting average. Amongst NCAA leaders, Stone's ERA is 35th and his 5.11 hits allowed per nine innings is 44th. In the Big 12, Stone's ERA and opponent batting average are the best in the league.
Stone's accolade gives Baylor its fourth weekly league honor of the season as Darryn Sheppard was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on Feb. 17.
Baylor begins a four-game road trip with a 6:30 p.m. CT contest on Tuesday at UT Arlington before heading to Charleston, W. Va., this weekend for the Bears' first Big 12 road series of the season vs. West Virginia.
