IRVING, Texas - Baylor baseball's Adam Toth was named Big 12 Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. The honor is Toth's first of his career, the first for a BU hitter this season and the seventh weekly league accolade for the Bears in 2014.
The junior outfielder was simply on fire as he went 11-for-22 (.500) in Baylor's five games last week with six runs, four RBI, three steals, two walks, one double and one home run for a .682 slugging percentage and .542 on-base percentage.
Last Tuesday against Sam Houston State, Toth went 3-for-5 with two stolen bases (with his second steal of home of the season) and a run scored. His three hits came in his first three at-bats to add onto his 5-for-5 performance on April 27 vs. Kansas - his 8-for-8 run at the plate tied a Baylor record for consecutive hits (Michael Howard, April 11-14, 2012). In a win last Wednesday over Texas A&M Corpus Christi, he was 1-for-5 with an HBP. On Friday in a win against Oklahoma, he had two walks, one steal and a run scored. On Saturday vs. Oklahoma, he went 2-for-5 with two runs, two RBI and his career-high third home run (fourth career). In Sunday's win at Oklahoma, Toth was a career-best 5-for-5 for the second time this season and second time in six games as he also had two RBI, two runs scored and a double. His performance over the weekend was significant in helping BU get its first series win in Norman, Oklahoma, since 2000.
Over the Coppell, Texas, native's last six games, he is 16-for-27 (.593) at the plate. On the season, Toth is hitting a career-high .306 and has career highs of 31 runs, 57 hits, four triples, three homers, 22 RBI, .430 slugging percentage, .345 on-base percentage and 1.000 fielding percentage in 100 chances. He leads the team in average, slugging percentage, runs, hits, triples, total bases and steals. In the Big 12, he is fourth in triples, seventh in steals and 13th in hits. In the NCAA, he ranks 50th in triples.
Toth is the first Bear to earn the player of the week honor since Lawton Langford on April 29, 2013. The accolade ups BU's 2014 Big 12 weekly awards total to seven, which are the most since 2012 (11). Daniel Castano (April 21), Matt Menard (April 14) and Darryn Sheppard (Feb. 17) each earned the newcomer of the week honor. Josh Michalec (March 10), Dillon Newman (March 17) and Austin Stone (March 24) all garnered the pitcher of the week award. The triumvirate marked the first time in league history that one school earned pitcher of the week in three consecutive weeks.
