WACO, Texas - Baylor's No. 2-ranked baseball team has clinched the regular season Big 12 Conference Championship outright. It's the third Big 12 title for the Bears and the third outright conference title in program history.
Baylor (18-0) officially clinched the outright title when Texas lost to Missouri on Saturday. The Bears have played only 75 percent of the conference schedule, but with six league games remaining, every other team in league has at least eight losses.
Baylor's 18-0 start in league play shattered the previous record for best start in league history, when Texas started 7-0 in 1999. The Bears also broke the Big 12 record for longest winning streak in conference play, passing Texas' 17-game winning streak of 2010, and their 24-game overall winning streak passed Texas' 21-game streak in 2010 for the longest by any Big 12 team since the league's first season of baseball in 1997.
The Bears' only remaining series are against Oklahoma (10-10) and Texas (13-8). Baylor has swept then-No. 2 Texas A&M (13-8), Oklahoma State (13-8), Missouri (9-12), Texas Tech (6-15), Kansas (4-13) and Kansas State (3-15).
Baylor is already assured of finishing with a better conference winning percentage than 10 of the previous 15 Big 12 regular season champions. With one more win, the Bears will clinch their best Big 12 season, passing the 2000 team's 23-7 record, and with two more victories, the Bears would have the second-highest winning percentage by any team in league history. Baylor needs to finish 4-2 to pass Texas (24-3 in 2010) for the Big 12 single-season winning percentage record.
The regular season championship is Baylor's second outright conference title in the last 89 years. The three times the Bears have won a league championship outright are 1923 (13-5 in Southwest Conference), 2000 (23-7 in Big 12) and 2012. Baylor shared the Southwest Conference title in1966 and shared the Big 12 title in 2005.
