Baseball to Help Launch Summer Reading Program

May 10, 2004

WACO, Texas - Baylor baseball player Drew Sutton will help McLennan County Library launch the third annual 'Join the Major Leagues @ your library?' at 6:00 p.m. Monday, May 17. The American Library Association (ALA), Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Association co-developed the literacy program.

Over 1,100 libraries nationwide are registered for this summer's reading effort, which encourages children to continue reading during their time away from school. New incentives, online tools in English and Spanish, and events at Major League Baseball games nationwide highlight the Join the Major Leagues @ your library? program, which officially opens Monday and runs through September 10.

Sutton will speak to children and their families about his personal experiences and how important reading is to him. Surprise teammates will also be joining Drew in the effort to boost the 21st century literacy program.

Join the Major Leagues @ your library? features an online baseball trivia contest and a trip to the 2004 World Series for one lucky prize winner. The Public Library Association (PLA), a division of ALA, is a co-sponsor of the program.
