Five Baseball Players Chosen on 2013 MLB Draft's Final Day

WACO, Texas - Baylor junior right-handed pitcher Dillon Newman, senior third baseman Cal Towey, senior right-handed pitcher Max Garner, senior shortstop Jake Miller and senior left-handed pitcher Crayton Bare were selected on the final day of the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Saturday.

With the five selections, Baylor has now had multiple draft picks in 15 of the last 16 MLB drafts and at least one Bear has been chosen in every draft since 1991. The program has also had at least one player chosen in 37 of the last 38 drafts, dating back to 1976. The Bears have had 133 total draft selections in program history.

Newman was chosen in the 16th round as the 467th overall pick by the Houston Astros. He is the fourth in program history to go in the 16th round and seventh to go to the Astros organization. The Belton, Texas, native was a 49th round pick in 2010 by the New York Mets prior to joining the Bears. In three seasons with 46 appearances and 14 starts, Newman compiled an 8-9 record with a 2.83 ERA in 149.2 innings with only 22 walks while striking out 113 and holding opponents to a .241 average. In his first season as a starter in 2013, the honorable mention All-Big 12 choice went 3-4 with a 2.91 ERA with five walks and 52 strikeouts in 77.1 innings while holding foes to a .225 average. His career 2.83 ERA ranks eighth all-time at Baylor, 1.038 WHIP ranks second and 5.13 strikeout-to-walk ratio ranks first.

Towey was selected in the 17th round as the 517th overall pick by the Los Angeles Angels. He is the second in program history to be selected in the 17th round and third to be picked by the Angels organization. In four seasons at Baylor with 211 games and 187 starts, the Seattle, Wash., native hit .287 with 131 RBI, 123 walks, 120 runs, 34 doubles, 28 steals, 17 homers and 14 triples. He was a second team All-Big 12 selection in 2012 and a first team choice in 2013. His 14 career triples rank 10th all-time in Baylor and Big 12 history while his 123 career walks rank sixth in program history.

 

 

Garner was selected in the 18th round as the 532nd overall pick by the Miami Marlins. He is the fourth in Baylor history to be chosen in the 18th round and fifth to go to the Marlins franchise. In four seasons at Baylor with 78 appearances and 20 starts, the Austin, Texas, native had an 8-13 record with a 4.47 ERA in 189.1 innings with 18 saves, 68 walks and 157 strikeouts while holding hitters to a .262 average. He was an honorable mention All-Big 12 choice in 2013 as a starter, going 3-6 with a 4.46 ERA in 84.2 innings. As a reliever in 2012, he was a first team All-Big 12 choice after recording a Big 12 best 10 saves to become the first pitcher in program history to lead a conference in saves outright. His 18 career saves rank in a tie for fourth all-time at Baylor.

Miller was selected in the 27th round as the 810th overall pick by the Arizona Diamondbacks. He is the fifth in program history to go in the 27th round and second to go to the Diamondbacks organization. In four seasons at Baylor with 200 games and 186 starts, the Houston, Texas, native hit .283 with 101 RBI, 96 runs, 48 walks, 41 doubles, 11 steals, seven homers and five triples. An honorable mention All-Big 12 choice in 2013, Miller's 492 career fielding assists rank sixth all-time at Baylor.

Bare was selected in the 28th round as the 844th overall pick by the Los Angeles Dodgers. He is the third in program history to be chosen in the 28th round and fourth to go to the Dodgers franchise. In four seasons at Baylor with 71 career appearances and one start, the Dallas, Texas, native posted an 8-4 record and seven saves with a 3.39 ERA in 87.2 innings with 88 strikeouts and 39 walks while holding opponents to a .227 average. A second team All-Big 12 selection in 2013, Bare went 6-2 with a 3.38 ERA in 53.1 relief innings and had a career-high five saves. His 70 career relief appearances rank seventh all-time at Baylor and his eight career relief wins rank in a tie for 10th. His six career relief wins in Big 12 play rank second all-time in program history.

Additionally, two of Baylor's 2014 incoming freshmen were drafted. Outfielder Darryn Sheppard was selected in the 24th round as the 730th overall pick by the Texas Rangers. The Sugar Land, Texas, native was a third team 2013 Rawlings All-American for Dulles High School. Right-handed pitcher Josh Pettitte was chosen in the 27th round as the 1,124th overall pick by the New York Yankees, the team for which his father Andy currently pitches for. The Deer Park, Texas, native led Deer Park High School to a district title and third round appearance in the Class 5A playoffs this season while being named a first team 2013 Rawlings Texas All-Region pitcher. Along the way he threw two no-hitters while posting a perfect 11-0 record - completing all 11 games he started - with a miniscule 0.65 ERA with 105 strikeouts in 79 innings.

With one year of eligibility remaining, Newman will have until July 12 at 4 PM CT to decide whether to sign a professional contract or join the Baylor program for the 2014 season. Baylor has had at least one junior selected in each of the last six drafts. Sheppard and Pettitte will face the same deadline on whether to sign professionally or play for Baylor next season.
