June 29, 2012

WACO, Texas – Baylor head coach Steve Smith announced the addition of Joe Sabatini to the 2013 baseball signing class on Friday. The Bears now have nine recruits in the 2013 class, and those players will join the program this fall.

Sabatini, a switch hitter from Tulsa, Okla., is the second catcher in Baylor’s class, joining Matthew Menard (Bridge City, Texas). The Bears will need to replace Big 12 Player of the Year Josh Ludy, who graduated after starting 63 of Baylor’s 66 games in 2012.

“I’m very pleased to be adding another quality athlete and quality young man to our incoming class,” Smith said.

As a home school student, Sabatini played for head coach Lannie McDaniel on the Northeast Oklahoma Association of Homeschools (NOAH) Jaguars. He hit .508 with 14 doubles, five triples, two home runs, 36 RBI and a .765 slugging percentage while helping the Jaguars to a 21-20 record in 2012.

Sabatini was selected to the 2011 Area Code Games in Long Beach, Calif., and also participated in the 2012 Perfect Game Predraft Showcase in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He spent three years as the starting quarterback on the NOAH football team, and he earned honorable mention all-state honors in all three of the seasons. He passed for 1,935 yards and 15 touchdowns during his senior season in 2011.

Sabatini is the grandson of former Air Force Academy head football coach Fisher DeBerry, and his uncle Joe DeBerry played college baseball at Clemson and was a third-round pick of the Cincinnati Reds in the 1991 MLB Draft. Sabatini is the son of Fred and Michelle Sabatini.
