2017 Baseball Summer League Update No. 2

WACO, Texas – After Baylor baseball’s very successful second season under Steve Rodriguez, 17 players have been assigned to play in various summer collegiate leagues across the country. The yearly tradition allows players to keep improving their skills in a live-game atmosphere against some of the country’s top talent.

Levi Gilcrease (Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks), Hayden Kettler (Matsu Miners) and Andy Thomas (Matsu Miners) are playing in the Alaska Baseball League. Through 27 games, Gilcrease is among the league’s top hitters across the board. He’s hitting .256 with 15 runs (ranks tied for fourth in the ABL), 23 hits (tied for eighth in the ABL), three doubles, one home run, 13 RBI (ranks tied for fifth in the ABL), 14 walks (ranks tied for fourth in the ABL) and four steals (ranks tied for fourth in the ABL). Thomas is hitting .273 with seven runs, 18 hits, one double, seven RBI and seven walks through 22 games. Kettler is 0-1 in three starts with a 4.38 ERA, allowing eight runs (six earned) on 12 hits and seven walks with 12 strikeouts in 12.1 innings.

Shea Langeliers (Chatham Anglers) is playing in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League, and ranks among the league leaders in power numbers. He made big news recently, hitting a game-winning grand slam on Saturday. Through 16 games, Langeliers his hitting .250 with eight runs, 15 hits, five doubles (tied for fifth in the CCBL), one triple, four homers (tied for third in the CCBL), 17 RBI (tied for third in the CCBL) and four walks.

Josh Bissonette (Wilmar Stingers), Joe Heineman (Lakeshore Chinooks) and T.J. Raguse (Lakeshore Chinooks) are playing in the Northwoods League. Bissonette is hitting .333 (tied for ninth in the NL) with 20 runs, 37 hits, six doubles, three homers, 16 RBI, 15 walks and two steals in 29 games. Heineman is 2-0 with a 3.66 ERA and one save, allowing eight runs on 16 hits and 11 walks with 29 strikeouts in 19.2 innings over 11 relief appearances. Through 20 games, Raguse has nine runs, 15 hits, three doubles, one home run, six RBI, two walks and three steals.

Tucker Cascadden (Danville Dans) and Alex Griggs (Danville Dans) are playing in the Prospect League. Cascadden has eight runs, 11 hits, one double, one triple, one homer, seven RBI, one walk and three steals in 18 games. Griggs is 1-0 with a 4.21 ERA, allowing 16 runs (10 earned) on 27 hits and 12 walks with 28 strikeouts in 21.1 innings over five relief appearances and three starts, including a complete-game effort.

Trevor Harris (Front Royal Cardinals), Ryan Leckich (Front Royal Cardinals) and Hunter Seay (Harrisburg Turks) are playing in the Valley Baseball League. Harris is 2-0 with a 0.61 ERA, allowing three runs (one earned) on seven hits and seven walks with 15 strikeouts in 14.2 innings over eight relief appearances. Leckich is 1-0 with a 1.76 ERA, allowing four runs (three earned) on nine hits and 10 walks with 14 strikeouts in 15.1 innings over three starts and one relief appearance. Seay is hitting .271 with six runs, 13 hits, one double, one triple, five RBI and six walks win 18 games as a hitter and is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA, allowing no runs on one hit and three walks with four strikeouts in 2.2 innings in his lone relief appearance on the mound.

Luke Boyd (Victoria Harbourcats), Tucker Johnson (Victoria Harbourcats), Davis Wendzel (Victoria Harbourcats), Daniel Caruso (Gresham Greywolves) and Cole Weaver (Gresham Greywolves) are playing in the West Coast League. Boyd is 2-2 with a 4.18 ERA, allowing 14 runs (11 earned) on 20 hits and nine walks with 20 strikeouts in 23.2 innings over two relief appearances and four starts. Johnson is hitting .327 with nine runs, 18 hits, three doubles, one homer, eight RBI, four walks and five steals in 16 games. Through 10 games, Wendzel is hitting .316 with seven runs, 12 hits, three doubles, one triple, one homer, six RBI, seven walks and three steals. Caruso is 2-1 with a 5.40 ERA, allowing 12 runs (11 earned) on 28 hits with five walks and 16 strikeouts in 18.1 innings over four relief appearances and two starts. Weaver is hitting .268 with seven runs, 11 hits, three doubles, four RBI and six walks in 17 games.
