WACO, Texas – After Baylor baseball’s very successful second season under Steve Rodriguez, 15 players have been assigned to play in various summer collegiate leagues across the country. The yearly tradition allows players to keep improving their skills in a live-game atmosphere against some of the country’s top talent.
Levi Gilcrease (Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks), Hayden Kettler (Matsu Miners) and Andy Thomas (Matsu Miners) are playing in the Alaska Baseball League. Gilcrease is one of the league’s top hitters across the board. He’s hitting .230 with 17 runs (ranks tied for sixth in the ABL), 26 hits (ranks eighth in the ABL), four doubles (seventh in the ABL), one home run, 14 RBI (eighth in the ABL), 15 walks (tied for seventh in the ABL) and six steals (tied for third in the ABL) in 34 games. Thomas was selected to the 2017 ABL All-Star Game and had an RBI in the contest. In 25 games, he’s hitting .260 with seven runs, 19 hits, two doubles, seven RBI and nine walks. Kettler is 0-1 in three starts with a 4.38 ERA, allowing eight runs (six earned) on 12 hits and seven walks with 12 strikeouts in 12.1 innings.
Shea Langeliers (Chatham Anglers) is playing in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League, and was a 2017 CCBL All-Star Game starter. He ranks among the league leaders in power numbers, and has had two go-ahead, game-winning home runs. Langeliers his hitting .263 with 14 runs, 26 hits, seven doubles (tied for fifth in the CCBL), one triple, six homers (tied for third in the CCBL), 20 RBI (sixth in the CCBL) and 12 walks in 27 games.
Josh Bissonette (Wilmar Stingers), Joe Heineman (Lakeshore Chinooks) and T.J. Raguse (Lakeshore Chinooks) are playing in the Northwoods League. Through 40 games, Bissonette is hitting .320 (12th in the NL) with 27 runs, 49 hits, six doubles, four homers (tied for 10th in the NL), 25 RBI, 19 walks and three steals. Heineman is 3-0 (tied for fifth in wins in the NL) with a 2.80 ERA (seventh in the NL) and one save, allowing nine runs (eight earned) on 20 hits and 11 walks with 37 strikeouts in 25.2 innings over 14 relief appearances (tied for eighth in the NL). Raguse has 12 runs, 18 hits, three doubles, one homer, seven RBI, six walks and three steals in 24 games.
Tucker Cascadden (Danville Dans) and Alex Griggs (Danville Dans) are playing in the Prospect League. In 23 games, Cascadden has 11 runs, 16 hits, two doubles, one triple, one homer, eight RBI, one walk and three steals. Griggs is 2-0 with a 4.81 ERA, allowing 24 runs (18 earned) on 40 hits and 16 walks with 38 strikeouts in 33.2 innings over six relief appearances and five starts, including a complete-game effort.
Trevor Harris (Front Royal Cardinals), Ryan Leckich (Front Royal Cardinals) and Hunter Seay (Harrisburg Turks) are playing in the Valley Baseball League. Harris is 3-0 with a 2.63 ERA, allowing 11 runs (seven earned) on 16 hits and 11 walks with 25 strikeouts in 24.0 innings over 11 relief appearances and one start. Leckich is 1-1 with a 2.28 ERA, allowing 12 runs (six earned) on 16 hits and 18 walks with 20 strikeouts in 23.2 innings over five starts and one relief appearance. Seay has eight runs, 16 hits, one double, one triple, six RBI, 10 walks and one steal in 18 games as a hitter and is 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA, allowing no runs on two hits and three walks with seven strikeouts in 4.2 innings in two relief appearances on the mound.
Tucker Johnson (Victoria Harbourcats), Daniel Caruso (Gresham Greywolves) and Cole Weaver (Gresham Greywolves) are playing in the West Coast League. Johnson is hitting .293 with 15 runs, 24 hits, four doubles, one homer, 12 RBI, 10 walks and five steals in 24 games. Caruso is 2-1 with 16 strikeouts in 18.1 innings over five relief appearances and two starts. Weaver is hitting .259 with 10 runs, 15 hits, three doubles, six RBI and nine walks in 22 games.
