Baseball Signs Six for 2012 season

Nov. 17, 2010

WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball head coach Steve Smith announced the signings of six student-athletes Wednesday. All six members of the signing class are high school seniors who will join the program in time for the 2012 season.

“We are very pleased and excited to have these young men and their families become part of Baylor University and the baseball program,” Smith said.

The following student-athletes are expected to join the Baylor program in the fall of 2011: OF Logan Brown (Rowlett, Texas), LHP/OF Michael Howard (Prescott, Ariz.), RHP Joe Kirkland (Magnolia, Texas), RHP/IF Ryan Smith (Waco, Texas), RHP Austin Stone (Port Neches, Texas) and OF Adam Toth (Coppell, Texas).

Howard is the top-ranked player in the state of Arizona and No. 123 nationally, according to Perfect Game Cross Checker. He went 5-0 with a 0.98 ERA and 52 strikeouts in 28.2 innings on the mound and hit .408 with five doubles, two triples, four home runs, 18 RBI and 22 stolen bases as a junior for Prescott High School in 2010.

Stone, who is ranked 54th in the state of Texas by Perfect Game, went 5-3 with a 0.99 ERA and 54 strikeouts in 49.2 innings of work for Groves High School in 2010.

Toth hit .443 with seven doubles, seven triples, four home runs, 18 RBI and 12 steals for Coppell High School last season. He earned first-team all-district and third-team all-state honors.

Ryan Smith, the oldest son of 17th-year head coach Steve Smith, posted a perfect 6-0 record with a 1.03 ERA as a junior pitcher in 2010. Smith’s success has continued on the gridiron as the quarterback for an 11-0 Midway High School team that won its first-round playoff game last Saturday.

Brown hit .390 with nine doubles and 16 stolen bases on his way to earning all-district honors as a second baseman for Rowlett High School in 2010. Also a standout football player, Brown had 12 receptions for 198 yards and two touchdowns in Rowlett’s first-round win in the state playoffs.

Kirkland, a second-team all-district pitcher at Magnolia High School, struck out 54 batters while pitching to a 6-2 record and a 1.62 ERA in 43.1 innings in 2010. Perfect Game ranks him the 79th-best prospect in the state of Texas.

Baylor opens the 2011 season Feb. 18-20 when the Bears host Oral Roberts for a three-game series at Baylor Ballpark.
