Dec. 15, 2011

WACO, Texas –Baylor baseball head coach Steve Smith announced a nine-member recruiting class for the 2013 season on Thursday. The class includes seven student-athletes from the high school ranks and two junior college transfers.

“We're very excited about this group of student-athletes and getting them into our program next fall,” head coach Steve Smith said. “Our goal is always to find high character, talented players who are academically gifted. We believe this signing class fits that description.”

Junior college transfers LHP Bobby McCormack (League City, Texas) and IF/C Brett Doe (Mesquite, Texas) will have two years of eligibility remaining when they join the program in the fall of 2012.

Baylor’s seven recruits from the high school ranks are: IF Ben Carl (Houston, Texas), IF/OF Max Hogan (Belton, Texas), C Matthew Menard (Bridge City, Texas), 1B Mitchell Price (The Woodlands, Texas), IF West Tunnell (Anthem, Ariz.), LHP Sterling Wynn (Waco, Texas) and RHP Drew Tolson (Houston, Texas).

Menard is ranked No. 39 in the state of Texas and No. 332 nationally, according to Perfect Game Cross Checker. He is a three-sport standout who was named football district offensive MVP in 2011 and district defensive MVP in 2010.

Wynn is a local product from China Spring High School who is ranked No. 90 in the state of Texas by Perfect Game. He went 9-2 with a 0.99 ERA and 126 strikeouts in 66.1 IP on his way to earning all-state honors last season.

Tunnell, the lone recruit from outside the state of Texas, is ranked No. 18 in Arizona by Perfect Game. He earned first-team all-region honors after hitting .433, with nine doubles and 21 RBI to lead Boulder Crees High School to a 33-6 record in 2011.

Hogan earned 2011 third-team all-state honors playing second base for Belton High School, the same program that produced current Bears Dillon Newman and Nick Wright. He hit .403 with 11 doubles and a .513 on-base percentage last season.

Price, a 6-2, 220-pound first baseman, hit .294 with five doubles and three home runs for College Park High School in 2011.

Carl and Tolson will continue their baseball careers as teammates at Baylor after finishing their prep careers at Memorial High School, the same program that produced current Bear Josh Michalec.

Carl was named a 2011 district co-MVP after hitting .379 with 12 doubles and 25 RBI as Memorial’s shortstop, while Tolson was named first-team all-state after going 7-1 with a 1.95 ERA and 93 strikeouts in 71.2 innings last season at Second Baptist High School in Houston. Tolson helped lead Second Baptist to a final record of 33-6 and a TAPPS 4A state runner-up finish. Carl helped Memorial to a 32-10 record and the state’s regional finals.

McCormack, a transfer from Angelina College, was named second-team all-conference after his freshman year at Angelina last season. He went 6-2 with a 1.78 ERA and 68 strikeouts in 69.1 innings for the Roadrunners.

Doe, who started his collegiate career at New Mexico before transferring to Navarro College prior to the 2011 season, helped Navarro win the NJCAA National Championship in his freshman season. As a prep shortstop, Doe was named first-team all-state in 2008 and 2009 while playing at Poteet High School.

Baylor opens the 2012 season Feb. 17-19 when the Bears host Oral Roberts for a three-game set at Baylor Ballpark. The Bears’ 2012 schedule features 56 games, including 28 against teams that played in the 2011 NCAA Tournament.
