25/RV BAYLOR (15-3) 71, UMASS (7-12) 45
JAN. 23, 2010

Baylor Head Coach Scott Drew
On the game…
"I think any coach would be concerned with a game in-between three ranked opponents and three top-10 opponents. I am really appreciative of our fans giving us energy and I was really pleased that our upperclassmen took advantage of an opportunity to make history with the best non-conference record, 13-1, since the 1945-46 season. Anytime that you have a chance to make history you need to take advantage of it. The last two years we have been 12-2 in the non-conference, so we were very pleased that we were able to do that. Defensively, anytime that you hold a division one opponent to 24 percent (shooting), that is outstanding. The rebounding department wasn’t as good, but I think this is the first time that we have been outrebounded and it will give us something to focus on going into Kansas State.”

On the stretch of games against Top-10 foes…
"When you talk about Kansas, Texas and Kansas State, that just speaks to the credibility of the Big 12 this year. Every game is a battle. Sometimes you look at a ranking and you see the number by somebody and you just assume they are better than somebody else. Every game in the Big 12 is a war and a battle. It is a great year to be a Big 12 basketball fan.”

On the free throw shooting…
"I know one thing—coaches don’t like to jinx free throws or talk about them too much, but we do like them when they go in. Hopefully we will continue (shooting well from the line). Ekpe (Udoh) has worked hard on his and I am glad to see that paying off.”

On the play of Ekpe Udoh…
"When he blocks shots we get some transition buckets that gives you great intensity and more energy. Ekpe wanted to a have a better game at Kansas. He felt like he was in foul trouble and he felt like he never really got into the flow of the game. I think it is a sign of a good player to come out and respond with a good game with almost a triple-double. That is what you want to see from upperclassmen and good players.”

Baylor Junior Forward Ekpe Udoh
On being outrebounded…

"They were just going to the glass. We just didn’t do a good job hitting the boards. We have to hit better, which is what we have to work on.”

On his presence in the paint…
“They just came to me. After a couple of blocks I could see them looking out of the corner of their eyes to see where I was. I just think that is my call for this team.”

Baylor Junior Guard LaceDarius Dunn
On the current stretch of games…

"We just have to take it one game at a time. It started with UMass and we came out here and took care of business. Up next we have K-State which is a very good team. Like Ekpe (Udoh) and Tweety (Carter) said, we have to come out and be ready to rebound better than we did today. I just think we have to take it one game at a time.”

Baylor Senior Guard Tweety Carter
On the play in the first half…
"Coming off of a loss to Kansas we wanted to come in aggressive. We didn’t start that way. It was a slow game at first. I thought (myself, Ekpe Udoh and LaceDarius Dunn) did a great job getting our team ready to come out in the second half ready to grind and play for the last 20 minutes. We have to do a better job coming out aggressive at all times.”

On the defensive play…
"We wanted to come out aggressively on defense and it started with me and Lace at the top. A.J. (Walton) did a great job coming in and Udoh was our shot blocker. We have to rebound better in order for us to compete against a better team.”

UMass Head Coach Derek Kellogg
Opening Statement…

“Baylor is a very good team. I have played and coached a lot of different NCAA tournament teams and they are a good ball club. If they continue to improve and get better, I think they can make a nice run in the NCAA tournament. Their length and their size bothered us. We turned the ball over quite a bit and they blocked a bunch of shots. I thought at times our inexperience came through. We did a very good job on the boards tonight. I thought we fought and scrapped. I thought we looked like an inexperienced team with so many young guys out there, but Baylor was the better team.”

On Ekpe Udoh…
"That is a nice guy to pick up as a transfer. I mean as much as anything he dominates the game by just being out there. His presence is really what separates him. You always have to be aware on both ends of the floor where he is located. He gives them an added dimension that sometimes in scheduling you don’t know.”

On what led to Baylor’s runs…
"I thought Tweety Carter and (LaceDarius) Dunn played real well along with the big guy (Udoh). They are kind of a three-headed monster, but those other guys are really good also. It was a combination of some different things.”

On Baylor’s defense…
“They do a good job in that zone. It allows the guards to kind of pressure the ball and play out and the big guys to stay home. I mean when you are 6-10, 7-0 and 6-11 it is tough. I thought we got it to the middle at times. I thought we had open looks and their length. Their length obviously bothered us. I didn’t think our guys played terrible at times. We just didn’t make a lot of the plays you have to make in a ball game.”

Senior Guard Ricky Harris
On Baylor’s defense…
"They are long and athletic which of course made the court smaller. Basically like they are a matchup zone type of defense. They kind of gave us problems, because they are long and athletic.”

On the second half…
"We just didn’t want to give up, just keep playing hard. That is a top-25 team playing on their home court, so it is tough. We just wanted to continue to compete with them.”

On outrebounding Baylor…
“That is one of our main focuses coming into every came. We want to rebound the ball well and hopefully that can lead to transition baskets, but tonight we really couldn’t get too many.“
