Baylor-Virginia Tech Postgame Quotes

March 21, 2009

Recap |  Box Score |  Notes |  AP Gallery

Baylor Head Coach Scott Drew

"I thought we really came out focused and did a great job, especially defensively. We contested shots. We really worked the ball well, we knew how good Virginia Tech was in transition and defensively, and we played one of our better games as far as executing. 20 assists is tremendous, and obviously, any team that is as well-coached and works as hard as Virginia Tech, you knew they were going to make runs. Credit our guys for being able to get composed and make sure we answered [those runs]."

"We have a senior-laden group that provides great leadership. They are playing well and they want to keep playing. They did a great job of following the game plan and making sure we didn't get rattled at the end."

"It is different to play [with a 25-point advantage], because a lot of games, when you get into conference play and the postseason, don't get to that point. I did a poor job, and slowed us down too much. I probably should have been more aggressive and keeping us aggressive. Credit Virginia Tech though, they got scrappy and forced us to turn the ball over. We should have stayed more aggressive and that was my fault."

Virginia Tech Head Coach Seth Greenberg

"That wasn't a lot of fun. Our inability to make a shot early really affected our ability to defend. We just stopped checking people, and passing got really big for them. They physically overpowered us up front, and we got down on ourselves. I feel bad because the crowd was great, people came and supported us, and we kind of let them down."

"We have to get stops to be good. The zone slowed us down for sure, it was a big zone. They did a nice job getting out to shooters and finding people. It is disappointing."

"We had a good year, not a great year. We had a very young team the majority of the time. [A.D Vasallo] has had one of the great careers of all the people who played at Virginia Tech. To commit to Virginia Tech when it wasn't all that fashionable. He really had a special career. He has been a fierce competitor, he has worked extremely hard at his game, he is a great teammate and he has given us more than we could ever ask for."

"We weren't sharp. As good against the zone as we were in the ACC Tournament, and as good as we were against the zone in the second half against Duquesne, we just didn't make plays. A lot of that has to the size of their frontcourt. We are not where we want to be, but we sure aren't where we were. We have a lot of work to do, and that's what I told the guys, `we have to get better'. Everyone, coaches and players, we all need to get better, but we have a good core group to work with."
