 Head Coach Scott Drew

Opening Statement:
“I thought it was a great way to start a tournament. Obviously did a lot of things well, starting with 31 assists; only 14 turnovers; shooting 63 percent; holding them to 33 percent. I thought we played like the weight was off our shoulders and really made a lot of extra passes and really played well. Also, I think the last two games at home we’ve really played our best basketball of the season, and hopefully that continues. Home-court advantage is so important in this postseason, and I want to thank all the fans that came out tonight. I know Friday’s game at 7 p.m. on ESPN2 is going to be a war. It’s going to be two great teams, whoever we end up playing. So hopefully we can get more people out as well, because we need you on Friday.”

On Pierre not starting:
“He just got to the game late. Pierre was super on the bench; did a great job getting his teammates excited and fired up. They really responded and rallied, and that was a great start to the game, a lot of extra passes. And then, P-Jack came in, six assists, zero turnovers; just like A.J., nine assists, two turnovers. And hopefully we saved some made baskets for Friday."

On the excellent shooting:
“I think part of that goes back to we got momentum in our last home game here. I think everybody had a good feeling with that. And I thought the crowd gave us energy early on. And I think playing in postseason, at the end of the day, not a lot of teams get a chance to play in postseason, especially in men’s basketball. You have got 350 schools, and what, 100 play. So you want to take advantage of each of those opportunities. Yeah, I wish we saw more [zone defenses]. But again, tonight I think we were making the extra pass, and good things were happening.”

 Junior Brady Heslip

On how nice it was to get some space to shoot:
“It was great. I love it when teams play zone. I can’t say that enough.”

On how he was able to shoot so effectively:
“Guys made a couple of extra passes early, found me when I was open so then once that happened I was just letting it go.”

Junior Cory Jefferson

On this statement win:
“We knew we were going to come out and play whoever we needed to play. At the same time it [Kentucky’s loss] let us know that everybody that we play is going to be ready to play no matter who we’re playing and that upsets can happen.

On playing a fast tempo game with Long Beach State:
“We like to play up and down. We have a team that likes to get out and run, and I think that just helped us out.”

Senior A.J. Walton

On starting as the point guard:
“I’m really mad, upset at myself because I had nine assists and I should’ve had ten. The two turnovers cost me. I’m really upset about that honestly.”

On the mentality coming into the game:
“Well our mentality coming into the game was that this could be our last one. We had to go out there and have fun no matter who was on the floor, just go out there and give it 100 percent and that’s what everyone did.”

 Head Coach Dan Monson

Opening Statement:
“Baylor is a very good basketball team. They played very well tonight. In 30 years of doing this is as non-competitive as I’ve ever had a team. I’m embarrassed and it’s my fault because as the coach you have to get teams ready to play in these types of situations and obviously we weren’t ready to play.”

On the course of the game:
“Right from the start we just stood around, and they took everything to us, every shot was open. You let a team like this get in rhythm and it’s going to be a long night and that’s exactly what happened.”

On defending the 3-point shot:
“We had seen (Brady) Heslip shoot before. We had film. But, again we didn’t compete defensively and it is really disappointing to end like that.”

On Baylor’s talent:
“They are awful good. Talent-wise we played Syracuse and Ohio State, who are a two seed and a four seed. They have as much talent as any of those. I don’t think Baylor has been as consistent as they could’ve been this year, but you could see today that when you let them do what they want to do they are awful good and that’s what we did today.”
