  BAYLOR QUOTES
  Head Coach Scott Drew

Opening Statement…
I think we saw improvement from our freshmen. I thought we got better in our transition defense. As far as offensively, we didn’t shoot it well. The good thing is we were still able to defend and rebound and improve from our first game. We feel good about that, especially when you have a quick turn-around. This helps prepare you for what we’re going to face with three games in four days. There are a lot of good things that we take from this.”

On Isaiah Austin…
“He’s rehabbing hard. [Athletic trainer David Chandler] is doing a good job with him. We’re hoping for Charleston, obviously, but still too early to know for sure. It’s a sprained ankle. I can handle those easy terms. They did some x-rays, just precautionary, so that’s good.”

On Rico Gathers…
“I thought Rico, with a double-double and six offensive rebounds, felt a lot more comfortable. He wasn’t as winded as the first game. That’s great that he was able to feel more comfortable out there. I thought he did a great job running the floor and getting some transition baskets.”

On limiting Jackson State’s offensive rebounds…
“I felt we got better at times. Our big issue is that the guys that were taking shots were getting too many rebounds. We’re playing good defense, so they’re missing the shot but you’ve got to finish and get the rebound. Playing a smaller lineup than we’ve played in the past few years, it’s important everybody rebounds and not just leave it up to one or two guys to get the rebounds.

  Senior Guard Pierre Jackson

On what Gathers did today starting…
“Rico stepped up. I honestly didn’t know he was starting. It even took him by surprise and he made the best of it.”

On how the team is looking…
“It’s going great. I still think we have a lot to improve on. We can be a lot better, but right now we’re playing good. We’re all clicking. We can get better at rebounding – just boxing out the shooter after shooting.”

  Freshman Forward Rico Gathers

On being nervous…
“I haven’t started a game since high school, so this was way different than what a high school game would be like. As soon as we got out onto the court and got into our flow, everything was cool.”

On being the biggest guy out on the court…
“I realize what God has blessed me with in size, and I use it to the best of my abilities.”

On playing with the guards…
“I feel like I’m playing with the best guards in the nation. That was one of my main reasons for wanting to come here and play for Baylor. Because I knew they had a fire point guard. It’s a blessing.”
