GONZAGA 68, 9/9 BAYLOR 64 American Airlines Center (Dallas, Texas)
Saturday, December 18, 2010 Attendance: 11,077
BAYLOR POSTGAME QUOTES
Head Coach Scott Drew
"Well I wish we had a different result because we like coming up here, but I don't know if we have ever won in American Airlines Center and we coaches are superstitious and we got to find somewhere else to play in Dallas. Credit Gonzaga for really coming up big (and) hitting shots. I think you look at (Marquise) Carter, the two big 3s and Kelly (Olynyk) hitting his big three that were the differences in the game. Execution-wise we could have executed a lot better. We could have played better, but this is a good game for us to learn to grow from. You never like to lose, but if it makes us a better team and I think it will and hopefully we will show that in Hawai`i, but I really credit Gonzaga for making the plays and we have to get better at things."
On Gonzaga changing defenses...
"I think in the second half we got into a better offensive rhythm. First half going to the basket we got way too many charging calls; we should have adjusted better to that. (We had) too many turnovers in the first half. We came out so excited to play; I think sometimes when you are overhyped (and) overexcited those things take the wind out of your sails. The good thing is we will learn from that and get better from it.
On if this game was a learning experience...
"You always want to win games, but the team that usually makes the plays (wins); that is one thing you can say is we didn't do a very good job on the boards and we have been so good on the boards thus far - that was disappointing. We will have to go back in film and watch what areas they hurt us on and what areas we have to get better at."
Senior Guard LaceDarius Dunn
On Saturday's loss...
"Hats off to them - I think (Gonzaga) wanted it more. They had more intensity than us at the beginning of the game. That is what we have to work on for the rest of the season - coming out and not waiting to the last minute to get going and start from the jump ball. I think that is what we did tonight and that is why we came up on the short end of the stick, but hats off to Gonzaga."
On if Gonzaga's defense was the best they had played this season...
"We know what we have to do. We have to go back and prepare. This is going to settle in and once it does, we have to refocus and get ready for Hawai`i."
On Baylor's turnovers...
"We had five assists and 17 turnovers. That is not going to get it done. That is not going to get it (done) in the Big 12 and, like I said, we have got to refocus. We have to pull together and start getting our workings on like I know we can."
Freshman Forward Perry Jones III
On his play in the second half...
"To be honest, I didn't want to lose. I just tried to do the best I can to get the team going, so we wouldn't be down as much. I just wanted to get it going and bring some energy."
Junior Forward Fred Ellis
On graduating and then playing the game...
"It was kind of bittersweet, but I am still proud of the guys. We competed and played hard. Gonzaga just had better execution than us. But as far as the day it was exciting, graduating and then getting up here fast. Although we didn't come out with the win, I am still proud of the guys and I still love them."
