BAYLOR POSTGAME QUOTES
Head Coach Scott Drew
"We weren't as sharp and crisp the last game we played, but we still found a way to win. Today we wanted to come out and do a lot better and I thought we really executed a lot better. Defensively, that's what we are and who we've been -- we held them to 34 percent shooting so that's very positive and encouraging. Our 39 to 27 edge on the boards was very good, and we were able to build on the lead rather than give it back in the second half. This is a team, Southern, who played Marquette, Florida, and Arizona and allowed, at most, 69 points against Marquette. So, I was very pleased and happy with what we were able to do today."
On free throws...
"I think we did a great job of getting to the paint, and especially as those fouls started to add up, not settling for jump shots too quickly. Early in the game we took a bunch of quick threes and we were like, wait a minute, we can get better shots than that. I was very pleased with how the guys adjusted."
Junior G Kenny Chery
On the flow of the game...
"Our goal was to get into the bonus, and go to the free throw line and knock down our shots. We came out together, we played together, and we came out with a big win."
Sophomore C Isaiah Austin
On slowing down Southern's big men...
"We've really been going at each other in practice, doing a lot of fighting around the post stuff to try to stop people from getting deep post touches. Coach has been telling us to be more active down there, and I thought we succeeded at that tonight."
On the balance of the team...
"It was great. Nobody on this team is selfish. Some games I'll only have four points, Corey [Jefferson] will have 30, Kenny [Chery] will have 20, and some game Brady [Heslip] won't get up a shot. Nobody complains, though, because we are all in it for the long run. We are a great brotherhood right now."
SOUTHERN POSTGAME QUOTES
Head Coach Roman Banks
"The thing we talked about is the energy and intensity level that you play with. If we can emulate Baylor's physicality with our bigs and the energy that they play with, I think we will be a better basketball team. They taught us today that if the ball is free, jump on the ball. If there is a loose ball, rebound. They taught us very well to keep a body on someone and always challenge you on offense and defense."
On how Baylor ranks against the other top 25 opponents Southern has faced this season...
"I think they are well-coached. [Scott Drew] does a great job with his team and I think that they are probably just as good as some of the top 20 teams that we have played. I think that any given night they can step on the floor and win. I think that those three bigs that they rotate keep the pressure on people. If you can't match that length and that intensity, it is pretty hard on you. That gave us a lot of problems tonight. They have a couple of guys who can really shoot the basketball. With the length that they have on the inside they have some of the better five or four men that we have played."
On Baylor being able to limit Calvin Godfrey and Malcolm Miller...
"We played a team that plays close attention to detail and they know that those guys are shooters and they didn't give them any space. It has challenged those guys, the teams that we have played lately. If you are not coming off screens, they are going to have to do some other things, like rebound, to get themselves in a rhythm. Tonight, they weren't able to do that. That is going to help us down the line because I don't know that we will be guarded like that all the time, but Miller is one of our preseason players of the year and we depend on him quite a bit. I don't know what he had tonight, but I know they did a great job on him and I know that he is going to have to learn to get his points in other places and be a little tougher and a little stronger. Our whole team learned that lesson tonight."
