Kenny Chery had Baylor's first-ever triple-double in a conference game in Saturday's 2OT win vs. K-State.
Feb. 17, 2014
IRVING, Texas - Baylor men's basketball junior guard Kenny Chery has been named Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Week, and sophomore center Isaiah Austin was selected as co-Player of the Week, as voted on by a panel of media members and announced Monday by the league office.
This is the second time this season Chery has been chosen as Newcomer of the Week, while Austin earned his first career Player of the Week selection after being named Newcomer of the Week twice a season ago. This is the fifth consecutive season Baylor has picked up multiple Newcomer of the Week awards, and it's the third straight year the Bears have had multiple Player of the Week selections.
Chery and Austin led the Bears to a double-overtime win against Kansas State on Saturday and a win at TCU on Tuesday. The victories were the first back-to-back Big 12 wins for BU this season.
Chery recorded the sixth triple-double in Baylor history and the first in a conference game when he posted 20 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds in Saturday's win against Kansas State. The Montreal, Quebec, native played a career-high 44 minutes in the game.
Chery also had 3 points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds and 3 steals in 22 minutes at TCU. That game was his return to the starting lineup after playing only a combined 20 minutes in the previous three games while recovering from a turf toe injury suffered in practice prior to the Jan. 28 game against West Virginia.
Austin had 18 points, 7 rebounds, a career-high 9 blocks and one crucial assist in a career-high 41 minutes played in Saturday's win. He came up one block shy of Baylor's single-game blocks record, but he tied Ekpe Udoh for the BU record for most blocks in a conference game. His assist came on the final play of regulation, when he grabbed an offensive rebound off of Baylor's third consecutive missed shot, and found Brady Heslip for a game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Austin also had 14 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds and 4 blocks in 30 minutes in Tuesday's win at TCU. He currently leads the Big 12 and ranks 20th nationally with 3.0 blocks per game, and his career average of 2.22 blocks per game is third-best in program history. He's also tied with Udoh for fifth place in BU history with 133 career blocked shots.
Baylor returns to action Monday night when it goes for a season sweep of Oklahoma State. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. CT at the Ferrell Center, and the game will be televised nationally on ESPN Big Monday.
