IRVING, Texas - Baylor men's basketball student-athletes Jake Lindsey and Jonathan Davis were named to the 2018 Academic All-Big 12 First Team, and King McClure was tabbed a second team honoree, as announced Thursday by the conference office.
Lindsey is one of five Big 12 players to pick up first team recognition for a second straight season, joining West Virginia's Jevon Carter (third straight), Kansas State's Mason Schoen, Oklahoma's Matt Freeman and TCU's Vladimir Brodziansky.
Davis joins Lindsey to give the Bears multiple first team honorees for the fourth time in the league's 22-year history. Josh Lomers and Mark Shepherd were recognized in 2008, Brady Heslip and Jacob Neubert in 2013 and Heslip and Logan Lowery in 2014.
McClure repeated as a second team member for the second straight season. He joins Andre White (2002, 2003) and Al Freeman (2015, 2016) as the only Bears named to the Academic All-Big 12 Second Team multiple times.
McClure, Davis and Lindsey combined to tie the second-most Academic All-Big 12 selections in program history. BU had four honorees in and three selections in 2015, though this season is the first time the Bears have placed three student-athletes on the Academic All-Big 12 teams with at least two of those on the first team.
All told, Baylor has now had 17 first-team honors by 12 different players and 12 second team selections by nine different players in the Big 12 Conference's 22 seasons.
A junior finance major from Houston, Lindsey joins Lomers (2008, 2009, 2010) and Heslip (2013, 2014) as the only players in program history to earn multiple Academic All-Big 12 first team selections.
Lindsey has played in all 28 games during the 2017-18 season, extending his streak to 97 consecutive games played over the entirety of his three years on campus. He's started the past seven games, helping the Bears to a 5-2 record and a climb from 10th place to fifth place in the Big 12 standings. He ranks third in the Big 12 with a 2.7 assist-to-turnover ratio and 14th in the league with 3.3 assists per game.
Lindsey also picked up CoSIDA Academic All-District 7 recognition on Thursday, making him eligible for the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team ballot.
A finance and real estate double major from Argyle, Texas, Davis became the 12th different Baylor player named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team. He's played in eight games, totaling nine points and two assists in 25 minutes.
McClure, a health, kinesiology and leisure studies major from Dallas, has played in all 28 games and made 21 starts during his junior season, averaging 8.4 points in 24.0 minutes per game. He's scored in double-figures 11 times this season, including a career-high 23 points vs. Randall.
A total of 32 student-athletes were recognized by the conference, with 21 first-team honorees and 11 second-team selections. First team members have maintained 3.20 or better GPAs, and second team honorees hold 3.00 to 3.19 GPAs. To qualify, student-athletes must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests, while freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence.
The Bears have three regular season games remaining, beginning with Saturday's 11 a.m. CT tipoff at TCU. BU then returns home for senior day against Oklahoma at 8 p.m. Tuesday, before heading back on the road to face Kansas State in Manhattan at 1 p.m. on March 3.
Tickets for Tuesday's 8 p.m. senior day game against Oklahoma are on sale for as low as $5 at www.BaylorBears.com/tickets or by calling the Baylor Athletics Ticket Office at 254-710-1000. The game will be a "whiteout," with 6,000 t-shirts distributed in the lower bowl of the Ferrell Center.
