Richard Hurd

Men's Basketball

Senior Forward

When did you start playing your sport?
I started playing when I was 12 years old in a summer league, and I have been playing ever since.

Who has had the greatest impact on your career?
Coach Tang. If it wasn't for him, I seriously would not be playing right now.

Favorite sport other than your own?

What is your nickname on the team and why?
I don't really have a nickname; they call me a bunch of different things. I am a character every day, so its always something new.

After meeting coach, what was your first thought?
Man if he is this much fun all the time it is going to be a good four years.

If you could play a different position, what would it be?
Well, our guards play the 1-4, so I guess center.

Do you have a pre-game ritual, if so what is it?
I just get in the weight room, beef up a little a bit. I mean, I've got to get my body right for the beach this summer. That's my ritual.

Who are your favorite sports heroes?
I would say Henry Dugat and Curtis Jerrells. Those guys really know how to work it. They play really well together on the court and I think their chemistry comes from their off court experiences.

What is the highlight of your sports career?
It was the 5 OT Texas A&M game. Coming in and hitting the free throws and getting the rebounds. That was the most pumped I have ever been for a game. The adrenaline has still hasn't gone down from it, but it was definitely the best game.

What opposing schools do you most look forward to competing against?
Texas and Texas A&M

What is one thing coach always tells you?
He always tells me to keep doing my job. Everyone has a role on the team, and you just have to do it; that is what makes it a team.

What is your favorite team road trip?

Who is your biggest fan?
If it's not Coach Mills, it has to be my mom. About two days before every game she will just call me and tell me to keep my head up and do what you have to do.

Why did you choose to attend Baylor?
I love Baylor. My brother was recruited to Baylor, unfortunately some things happened and he didn't come this way. I have been coming to Baylor games since I was 16, so I just wanted to come to Baylor.

What's the most important thing you've learned as a Baylor athlete?
It is not as easy as it looks. There is a lot of work that goes behind getting a full ride or being on a team. You have got to work. You cannot take a day off or someone will take your position.

What single thing will you most miss about Baylor when you leave?
Probably just being in school and the atmosphere.

Who is your all-time favorite Baylor athlete?
Mike Singletary. He came and spoke to us a few years ago. Just looking at his physical stature now, I just couldn't imagine him seeing him all those years ago on that field and how big must have been. He was the greatest defensive player of all time, and it doesn't get much better than that.

What is one thing you would change about Baylor?
Parking. Parking is quite terrible. It is horrible, let's get some more parking!

As a role model to young athletes, what advice can you give?
Just keep your head up. Your situation can change everyday. You're on top of the world one day and at the bottom of the mountain the next. You just got to role with punches.

What are three words that describe you?
Muscular, Intelligent, Perseverant

What song is stuck in your head right now?
The Baylor Line

What is your favorite T.V. show?
The Office

Name one thing you can't go a week without.

What is your dream job?
I want to be an actor. So anyone out there who has the connections in Hollywood, Dallas, New York, or in the California area, just let me know.

What's your most valued possession?
My car; It is the only thing that I have really worked for and purchased on my own, so I take a lot of pride in that.

Best non-athletic talent?
Sleep. I can sleep with the best of them let me tell you!

Favorite musical artist?
I don't really have a favorite.

Biggest superstition?
I don't have a superstition

Biggest fear?
Drowning; I don't do water. I will do a cruise because they have life boats. I don't just get in the water if I don't have to. [Cancun] was awful actually. We went snorkeling and I held onto the boat and paddled at the same time. The lady told me `if you are going to hold on, you don't have to kick your feet.' I told her, I'm not going down!

Least favorite food?

Worst movie you've seen?
The Wicker Man or The Village. The ending [to The Village] that's all.

Favorite T-Shirt?
A Family Guy T-Shirt with Stewie on it

Movies or TV?

ESPN until reality season; when it is reality season, then MTV is the king.

Inflatable Judge or Bruiser?
Bruiser because the inflatable guy, you just don't know what he is going to do, it is kinda awkward. I mean, one minute you look down at your popcorn and the next minute he is on top of his head. It is just a little weird to me.

Daytime or Nighttime?

Penland or Memorial?
Penland by far
