WACO, Texas – Three members of Baylor’s 2012 Elite Eight men’s basketball team will embark on a two-week competitive tour May 26-June 10 in Germany and Poland with Athletes In Action. Sophomore guard Brady Heslip and freshman guard Deuce Bello are two of the 11 NCAA Division I student-athletes selected for the trip and will be coached by Baylor Director of Operations Tim Maloney.
The two-week tour will begin with five practice days in Poland, followed by three games June 1-3 against the Polish National Team. AIA will then travel to Germany to face five professional teams – Essen, Dusseldorf, Paderborn, Alba and Stahnsdorf.
The Poland/Germany tour marks the third consecutive summer that multiple Baylor players will travel overseas with Athletes In Action – A.J. Walton and Cory Jefferson competed with AIA in 2010 and 2011. Recent Baylor graduate Quincy Acy played with AIA in 2009.
Maloney, who just completed his third year on Scott Drew’s staff, will serve his third head coaching stint with AIA. Last summer, Maloney coached AIA’s team that toured Macedonia and Kosovo; that team finished 5-1 with a tournament title after defeating Poland in the championship game. In 2007, Maloney coached the AIA team that finished 5-0 in Germany and featured Baylor All-American point guard Tweety Carter. As a student-athlete in 1984, Maloney also played for AIA against professional teams in South America.
Bello and Heslip will be joined by Drew Barham (Memphis), Akii Mitchell (Virginia), Daniel Coursey (Mercer), Jordan Juenemann (Kansas), Jamil Wilson (Marquette), Josh Richardson (Tennessee), Christian Garrett (Kansas), Jordan Keves (UT Arlington) and Karol Gruszecki (UT Arlington). Liberty assistant coach Pawl Mrozik will coach with Maloney.
Heslip, a sophomore from Burlington, Ontario, became a household name during Baylor’s 2012 NCAA tournament run, highlighted by his career-high 27 points and nine 3-pointers in a third-round win over Colorado in Albuquerque. The Big 12 All-Tournament selection averaged 10.2 points in 38 games, while leading the Bears in 3-point field goals made (100) and 3-point field goal percentage (45.5 percent). Bello, a freshman from Greensboro, N.C., averaged 3.3 points and 1.9 rebounds in 30 games and played a huge role as one of Baylor’s main defensive stoppers in the postseason.
The goals of this tour are to provide a rich cross-cultural experience for each team member and for team members to grow in their personal faith. Athletes In Action, a Christian sports organization, is active in 75 countries, on nearly 125 U.S. college campuses and with 35 U.S. professional sports teams.
