WACO, Texas - Baylor men's basketball players Isaiah Austin and Cory Jefferson have been named to the 2013-14 Preseason All-Big 12 team, as announced by the league office Thursday. This marks the first time in program history the Bears have had two players named preseason All-Big 12.
Baylor's five preseason All-Big 12 selections in the last four seasons leads all Big 12 teams, and the four consecutive years with at least one selection trails only Kansas. Joining Austin and Jefferson to give the Bears the most picks since 2010-11 are Pierre Jackson (2012-13), Perry Jones III (2011-12) and LaceDarius Dunn (2010-11).
Jefferson and Austin both elected to return to Baylor for the 2013-14 season despite the potential to be first-round picks in the 2013 NBA Draft. Jefferson, a fifth-year senior from Killeen, Texas, has been named the nation's No. 4 power forward by Lindy's, and the same publication tabbed Austin, a sophomore from Arlington, Texas, as the nation's No. 4 center.
Both players were named to the 2013 NIT All-Tournament team after leading the Bears on a five-game winning streak to claim the program's first national tournament title. Austin earned second-team All-Big 12 honors and was twice named Big 12 Rookie of the Week a season ago, while Jefferson was an honorable mention All-Big 12 pick and earned one Big 12 Player of the Week honor. Jefferson went on to play for Team USA at the 2013 World University Games, where he competed against Baylor teammate Brady Heslip, who played for Canada.
Jefferson started all 37 games and averaged 13.3 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.9 blocks as a junior. He led the Big 12 and ranked sixth nationally with a .610 field-goal percentage, and he recorded 10 double-doubles, which ranked fourth in the Big 12. He led the Bears through the NIT by averaging 21.6 points per game on 71.9% shooting, including four consecutive 20-point games to close the season.
Austin played in 35 games as a true freshman and averaged 13.0 point, 8.3 rebounds and 1.7 blocks in 29.9 minutes per game. He posted 11 double-doubles, which ranked third among Big 12 players and fourth nationally among all freshmen. He also had the fifth-most rebounds (292) and sixth-most blocks (58) of any freshman in Big 12 history. Austin had a 19 point, 20 rebound game against Oklahoma, which made him the only Big 12 player to post 20 boards in a game last season. He had one of his best all-around games in the NIT championship, posting 15 points, nine rebounds, five blocks, four assists and two steals in 34 minutes.
The Bears open the 2013-14 season on Nov. 8 when they take on former Big 12 member Colorado in the Tip-Off Showcase at Dallas' American Airlines Center. Baylor's home opener vs. South Carolina will tip at 2 p.m. CT on Nov. 12 and will be televised on ESPN.
