PJ3 is the first conference preseason Player of the Year in program history.
Oct. 6, 2011
IRVING, Texas - Baylor sophomore power forward Perry Jones III was named Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year, the conference office announced Thursday. Players honored in preseason voting were selected by the league's head coaches, who are not permitted to vote for their own student-athletes.
It marked the first time in program history that Baylor has had the conference's preseason Player of the Year.
After a freshman All-American season in 2010-11, Jones III returned to Waco for his sophomore season, spurning the opportunity to become an NBA lottery pick. The most heralded recruit in program history, PJ3 started a Baylor freshman-record 30 games a season ago, averaging 13.9 points and 7.2 rebounds in 33.9 minutes-per-game. He became the first player in program history to be named USBWA Freshman All-American, while also picking up Freshman All-American honors from Basketball Times and CollegeInsider.com.
He was named a second-team All-Big 12 and a unanimous Big 12 All-Rookie selection by the league's coaches. Despite having to sit out the first five games of the 2011-12 season to satisfy a six-game suspension from the NCAA, the Duncanville, Texas, product has been tabbed a preseason All-American by Sporting News (first team), Athlon (second team) and Blue Ribbon (second team), first-team All-Big 12 by three preseason publications and Big 12 Player of the Year by both Lindy's and Athlon.
PJ3 was one of three unanimous selections to the 2011-12 Preseason All-Big 12 Team. In addition to Jones III, Thomas Robinson (Kansas), Marcus Denmon (Missouri), J'Covan Brown (Texas) and Khris Middleton (Texas A&M) were recognized.
Senior Quincy Acy was among seven players to receive Preseason All-Big 12 honorable mention. In 2010-11, Acy averaged 12.4 points and team-best 7.6 rebounds, earning All-Big 12 honorable mention and Big 12 Co-Sixth Man Award honors by the league's coaches. The Mesquite, Texas, product needs 95 points to become the 25th 1,000-point scorer in Baylor history and currently ranks second in program history in career field goal percentage.
