KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Baylor men's basketball team received its highest preseason ranking in program history Thursday, debuting at No. 12 in the USA TODAY/ESPN Preseason Top 25 coaches' poll.
Baylor was the highest ranked Big 12 team, one spot ahead of preseason Big 12 co-favorite, Kansas (No. 13). The other preseason Big 12 co-favorite, Texas A&M, is ranked No. 19, while Missouri came in at No. 25.
Baylor, which was picked to finish third in the 2011-12 Big 12 Conference Preseason Poll, is ranked in either the USA TODAY/ESPN Preseason Top 25 poll for the second time in program history. Last season, the Bears were ranked No. 16 in the AP and No. 14 in the USA TODAY/ESPN preseason polls. Baylor has now been ranked in each of the last five seasons - a total of 30 weeks (including preseason polls). Prior to the 2007-08 campaign, Baylor had only been ranked for three weeks in the program's first 101 seasons (one week in 1948-49, two weeks in 1968-69).
During the 2010-11 season, Baylor was ranked as high as No. 9 in both the AP and USA TODAY/ESPN Top 25 polls - the highest regular-season ranking in program history. After finishing with an 18-13 record and missing the postseason for the first time in four seasons, the Bears return eight letterwinners, headlined by 2011-12 Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year, Perry Jones III. Baylor also returns 2011 Big 12 Co-Sixth Man of the Year, Quincy Acy, and starters Anthony Jones and A.J. Walton.
Baylor opens the 2011-12 season Nov. 1 with an exhibition against Abilene Christian, followed by its regular-season opener Nov. 11 vs. Texas Southern.
