NEW YORK - Baylor has been tabbed No. 25 in The Associated Press preseason men's basketball top 25 poll, which was released Thursday. This marks the seventh straight year the Bears have been ranked and their fourth consecutive AP preseason ranking.
BU received 180 points in the AP voting, just nine behind No. 24 Virginia. The Bears received 102 points in the USA Today coaches' poll that was released on Oct. 17, just one point away from cracking the top 25.
Baylor's No. 25 preseason ranking is the fourth-best in program history. The Bears have previously been ranked No. 12 (2011-12), No. 16 (2010-11) and No. 19 (2012-13) in AP preseason polls.
In addition to two games each against Big 12 teams Kansas (No. 5) and Oklahoma State (t-No. 8), Baylor also plays Kentucky (No. 1), and the Bears could face Syracuse (t-No. 8) and Gonzaga (No. 15) in the 2013 EA Sports Maui Invitational.
Baylor's games at the Maui Invitational will be played Nov. 25-27, and the Bears' game against Kentucky will be played Dec. 6 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. BU plays Kansas at home on Feb. 4 and in Lawrence, Kan., on Jan. 20, and the Bears take on Oklahoma State at home on Feb. 17 and in Stillwater, Okla., on Feb. 1.
Additionally, Baylor's Royce O'Neale received a waiver from the NCAA on Thursday granting him immediate eligibility. He has two years of eligibility remaining after playing his first two collegiate seasons at Denver, where he started every game and earned All-WAC recognition a season ago.
The Bears' season opener is Nov. 8 against Colorado at Dallas' American Airlines Center, part of the Tip-Off Showcase that will be televised on FOX Sports Southwest. Baylor's first home game is Nov. 12 against South Carolina, and that game will be televised nationally during ESPN's Tip-Off Marathon.
