Jefferson Named Big 12 MBB Player of the Week

Dec. 2, 2013

IRVING, Texas - Baylor men's basketball senior Cory Jefferson has been named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Player of the Week, as voted on by a panel of media members and announced Monday by the conference office.

Jefferson picked up his second career Big 12 weekly honor after averaging 14.0 points, 7.8 rebounds and 1.5 blocks to lead the Bears to a 3-1 record last week, including a runner-up finish in the 2013 EA Sports Maui Invitational.

Jefferson was named to the Maui Invitational all-tournament team, which was his third all-tournament honor in the last two seasons. He also earned all-tournament recognition in the 2012 Charleston Classic and the 2013 NIT.

A Killeen, Texas, native, Jefferson helped the Bears to the championship game in Maui by hitting the game-winning basket in a 67-66 victory over Dayton in the tournament's semifinals. Jefferson collected an offensive rebound and put it back for the go-ahead layup, and then he defended Dayton's final shot, forcing the Flyers to take a tough fadeaway jumper that missed.

Jefferson made two-third of his field goal attempts during the week, connecting on 22-of-33 shots, and he scored in double figures in all four games, including a team-best 15 points and eight rebounds in the Bears' seven-point loss to No. 8 Syracuse. He had his fourth double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds in only 22 minutes against Hardin-Simmons on Sunday.

Through eight games this season, Jefferson leads the Big 12 in both rebounds per game (8.8) and double-doubles (4), ranks ninth in blocks per game (1.4) and 13th in points per game (13.5).

Jefferson was previously honored as Big 12 Player of the Week on Nov. 12, 2012, after he averaged 22.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 4.0 blocks in two games during the season's opening weekend. He's the eighth player in program history to earn the award multiple times, joining Patrick Hunter, Terry Black, Curtis Jerrells, Kevin Rogers, LaceDarius Dunn, Perry Jones III and Pierre Jackson.

Baylor returns to action on Friday when it hosts Kentucky in the second half of a men's and women's basketball doubleheader at AT&T Stadium. The women's game is scheduled to tip off at 6:30 p.m. CT, followed by the men's game at 9 p.m. The men's game will be televised nationally on ESPN.
