IRVING, Texas - Baylor men's basketball junior guard Kenny Chery has been named Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Co-Newcomer of the Week, as voted on by a panel of media members and announced Monday by the conference office.

This is the second consecutive week a Baylor player has been honored with a Big 12 weekly award, as Cory Jefferson was named Player of the Week on Dec. 2. It's the first career honor for Chery and the first time a Baylor player has been named Newcomer of the Week since Isaiah Austin was recognized on Dec. 17 last season. It's the 10th time in the last four seasons a Baylor player has earned the league's weekly newcomer honor.

Chery led Baylor to a 67-62 win over No. 3 Kentucky on Friday night at AT&T Stadium, the site of the 2014 Final Four. He had a game-high 18 points and led Baylor with five assists and 34 minutes played. Chery committed only two turnovers, connected on 8-of-15 field goals, hit both free throw attempts and added one rebound and one steal.

Chery's free throws gave Baylor the lead for good at 56-55 with 6:01 remaining, and he put the game away with a jumper to extend Baylor's lead to 65-61 with 41 seconds remaining. Kentucky's No. 3 AP ranking tied the highest AP-ranked team the Bears have ever defeated.

The game at AT&T Stadium was considered a neutral-site contest by the NCAA, which means Baylor now boasts neutral wins Colorado, Kentucky and Dayton. The Bears are No. 14 in the AP poll released Monday, while Kentucky is at No. 11, Colorado is No. 21 and Dayton is receiving votes and 32nd overall. BU's lone blemish on its 8-1 record is a seven-point neutral-site defeat to current No. 2 Syracuse.

A Montreal, Quebec, native, Chery is tied for fourth in the Big 12 with 4.9 assists per game and ranks seventh with a 2.2 assist-to-turnover ratio. His honor extends Baylor's streak of consecutive seasons with at least one Newcomer/Rookie of the Week honoree to 10 straight.

Baylor has four non-conference home games before opening Big 12 play at Iowa State on Jan. 7. The Bears host Northwestern State (Dec. 18), Southern (Dec. 22), Oral Roberts (Dec. 30) and Savannah State (Jan. 3), and all four games will be televised by Baylor Vision on FOX Sports.
