WACO, Texas (AP) - Dane King threw two touchdown passes in a 42-second span
of the fourth quarter to secure Baylor's 37-14 victory over North Texas on
Saturday night.
Baylor (2-1) of the Big 12 Conference avenged a 52-14 loss to North Texas
(0-4) last year.
King's 7-yard scoring pass to Dominique Zeigler was quickly followed by a
40-yard TD pass to Marques Roberts with 14:08 left to put the Mean Green away.
Baylor built a 17-14 lead in a wild first half that included a blocked punt
for a touchdown.
North Texas of the Sun Belt Conference struck for a touchdown on its first
possession, a 67-yard strike from Scott Hall to a wide-open Johnny Quinn.
Freshman Braelon Davis blocked Brad Kadlubar's punt and recovered the ball
in the end zone for a touchdown to quickly tie the score for the Bears.
Paul Mosley's 10-yard run after a 20-yard pass from King to Trent Shelton
put Baylor ahead 14-7.
Hall and Quinn hooked up for a 33-yard pass to position the Mean Green for
Jeramy Thomas' 43-yard touchdown run. Thomas, who gained a North Texas freshman
record 247 yards against Colorado last week, left in the third quarter with a
hamstring injury.
Thomas was filling in for the injured Patrick Cobs, who ran for 131 yards
against Baylor last year and went on to claim the NCAA Division I-A rushing
title.
Kenny Web's 25-yard field goal handed Baylor the slim halftime edge. He
added 37-yarder in the third period and a 38-yarder in the fourth.
Baylor is 12-1 all-time against North Texas, which dropped to 3-17 against
Big 12 schools. The Mean Green also has losses to Texas and Colorado this year.
