Signing Day Central | Press Conference | Full Highlights of Signees | Press Conf. Quotes

WACO, Texas -- Baylor head coach Art Briles announced Wednesday the signing of 19 student-athletes to National Letters of Intent to play football at the school. The 19 2011 signees are comprised of 15 high school standouts and four junior college transfers.

"Today we added some quality players that are quality people who have the ability to press for playing time immediately," Briles said. "That's what's really exciting about the class in general."

The focus of Baylor's 2011 signing class was clearly linemen, as nearly half of the 19 newcomers are slated to play on the offensive (four) and defensive (five) lines.

"This class was about filling needs," Briles said. "We always start up front with o-line and d-line and this is without a doubt the strongest o-line, d-line class that's been put together at Baylor in many years. Defensively, you just can't get enough guys that can play up front on defense, so we're always going to be trying to find those high-motor guys that are physical and tough up front and we did this year."

The five defensive linemen include early enrollees Nick Johnson of Navarro College and Trevor Clemons-Valdez of Copperas Cove High School as well as Beau Blackshear of Midway High School, Suleiman Masumbuko of Trinity High School and Donald Bryant of Daingerfield High School. The four offensive linemen are Spencer Drango of Cedar Park High School, LaQuan McGowan of Cal Farley's Boys Ranch, Pat Colbert of Kilgore High School and Desmine Hilliard of Lincoln High School.

Another position of strength appears to be the defensive backfield, with four DBs and one "athlete" listed among the 2011 class. The secondary welcomes mid-year enrollees Josh Wilson of Kilgore College and Jay Johnson of Lago Vista High School as well as K.J. Morton of College of the Sequoias, athlete Anthony Webb of La Porte High School and DB Daniel Whitmore from Iowa Western Community College.

"We had five seniors that graduated so we had to fill the void there a little bit and we've got some guys that can come in here and compete and play," Briles said. "And there's always a great opportunity to get on the field fast at a skill position."

Twelve of the 19 newcomers are slated to play defense under new coordinator Phil Bennett. The 2011 Baylor defense will have to replace six starters and 11 departed seniors.

"We lost quite a few seniors from the defense so we need to fill the void there," Briles said. "We were a little younger offensively last year so we didn't need to take as many on that side of the ball."

Baylor's 2011 class includes five student-athletes currently enrolled in Baylor's spring semester who will participate in 2011 spring drills (scheduled to begin Feb. 28): mid-year junior college signees Nick Johnson, Wilson and Whitmore and two early high school graduates Jay Johnson and Clemons-Valdez.

BRILES ON WEBB
"Anthony is a high school running back and a tough kid. He did a great job of leading his team in high school. He is a player that can play either side of the ball, but we'll probably start looking at as a cornerback defensively. I like cornerbacks that have been high school running backs, because they are used to carrying the load and being tough and it translates pretty good onto the other side of the ball."

We're excited that Josh is a Baylor Bear."
