WACO, Texas -- Baylor head coach Art Briles announced Wednesday the signing of 23 student-athletes to National Letters of Intent to play football for the defending Big 12 champions. The 23 2014 signees are comprised of 19 high school standouts and four junior college transfers.
"The great thing about this class is that all these guys made a choice to come to Baylor," Briles said, "because they all had multiple offers. What we are doing with this class is increasing the level of competition on campus by bringing players of this caliber to the table."
"The thing that we feel really good about is that we've signed the No. 1 receiving class in America -- I don't think that's up for debate -- and we feel like we filled all the other areas that we needed in this signing class. We've got some great defensive players, we've got some great o-linemen, and we've got a chance to really keep increasing our production on the football field over the next four or five years with these guys, who are great additions to our football family."
Briles referred to the four wide receivers who inked with Baylor as, "the top receiving class in America," referring to two All-Americans: KD Cannon of Mount Pleasant (Texas) High School, Davion Hall of Liberty-Eylau High School in Texarkana, Texas; and two top-300 national prospects: Chris Platt of Willis (Texas) High School, and Ishmael Zamora of Elsik High School in Alief, Texas.
"I think at the end of the day we brought in the top receiver class," Briles said. "This group of receivers is unmatched; there aren't four better guys in America, without question and without controversy."
Baylor's signing class includes a fifth top-300 prospect, running back Terence Williams of Ennis (Texas) High School.
The receiving corps wasn't the only position Briles singled out, he also mentioned the offensive line as a strong point among signees. "Without question we signed a great o-line," Briles said. "Those guys are phenomenal, they're all big-time players."
On the defensive side of the ball, Briles talked about the play-making ability of eight freshmen and three transfers. "The impressive thing about the defensive guys we're bringing in is that we feel like they all are going to be impact players for us," Briles said.
Briles mentioned the benefit of competition in the secondary that the signing of two junior college defensive backs would create. "The secondary JC guys, Chris Sanders, Tion Wright, we're bringing those guys in to play," Briles said. "All the JC transfers, Jarell Broxton on the O-line; Grant Campbell, they'll all have a chance to get on the field immediately."
As usual, Baylor's 2014 class is made up predominantly of Texas recruits (21 of 23 from in-state schools) and it includes seven student-athletes currently enrolled in Baylor's spring semester who will participate in 2014 spring drills (scheduled to begin Feb. 28): Hall, Williams and fellow early high school enrollee Jordan Feuerbacher, a tight end from Kingwood Park HS in Kingwood, Texas; as well as mid-year junior college signees Broxton, an offensive lineman from Lackawanna College in Scranton, Pa., linebacker Campbell of Bakersfield (Calif.) College, and defensive backs Sanders of Eastern Arizona College and Wright of Moorpark (Calif.) College.
