Baylor head football coach Art Briles, who rebuilt a dormant Stephenville [Texas] High School program in a powerhouse, is one of eight individuals who will be inducted into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame on Saturday, May 3.
Briles' father, Dennis, was a highly successful Texas high school football coach and the younger Briles has followed those footsteps. The younger Briles served as an assistant coach at both Sundown and Sweetwater high schools before landing his first head coaching job at Hamlin (Texas) High School (1984-86). From Hamlin, Briles went to Georgetown [Texas] High School as head football coach and athletic director for two seasons (1986-87) before moving to Stephenville [Texas] High School in 1988.
At Stephenville, Briles resurrected a program that had not been to the playoffs since 1952, leading the Yellowjackets to four state championships. His Yellowjacket teams captured back-to-back state crowns in 1993 and 1994 and repeated that feat in 1998 and 1999. In 1998, Stephenville posted a then-national record 8,650 total-offense yards and still holds the third and fourth positions on the all-time national lists. In a remarkable six-year run, his Yellowjacket teams went 90-2-1.
While coaching in the high school ranks, Briles developed six Division I quarterbacks and had five signal callers throw for over 3,000 yards in a season. One of his quarterback pupils, Brandon Stewart, is also among the Hall of Fame's Class of 2008. Stewart played on Briles' 1993 state championship team.
From the high school ranks, Briles moved on Texas Tech as an assistant coach in 2000 and Houston as head coach in 2003. He was named Baylor's 25th head football coach on Nov. 28, 2007.
Briles and Stewart are joined in the Class of 2008 by Johnny "Lam" Jones of Lampasas, Conrad "Connie" Magourik of London, Johnny Treadwell of Stephen F. Austin, Joe Wylie of Henderson, Nati Valdez of Mission and Bryan-College Station Eagle sportswriter Robert Cessna in the special category.
