NEW YORK - For the second straight year, Baylor tight end Jordan Najvar has been placed on the preseason watch list for the John Mackey Award, released Tuesday by the award's selection committee.
The John Mackey Award has been given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end since 2000. It is named for NFL Hall of Fame member John Mackey, who is considered to be the one of the best to have played the tight end position.
Najvar, a senior, joins 36 other tight ends on the list, while being the only player from a Big 12 school and the lone representative from a school in Texas.
After making the award's watch list in 2012, Najvar went on to play in all 13 games for the Bears, earning All-Big 12 honorable mention honors from the league's coaches and the Associated Press.
He totaled 10 receptions on the year for 80 yards with two touchdown catches. Najvar also tallied one rushing TD last season.
The Spring, Texas-product had his best game of 2012 against Sam Houston State as he racked up a career-high tying three receptions for 24 yards, including a 10-yard TD catch.
Najvar is also a key part of what Baylor does on the ground with his blocking ability. With Najvar's help, BU's rushing attack ranked 14th in the nation (231.7 yards-per-game) in 2012.
The Mackey Award winner will be selected by vote of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee and will be announced live on Dec. 12 at The Home Depot College Football Awards. The 2013 Mackey Midseason Watch List will be released on Oct. 14, while the 2013 Mackey semifinalists will be unveiled on Nov. 18 and the finalists on Nov. 25.
