For a second straight year, Baylor senior linebacker Bryce Hager
has been named to the 51-member preseason watch list for the 30th-annual Butkus Award, as announced by the Butkus Foundation Monday.
Hager has now been named to four preseason watch lists for 2014. In addition to the Butkus, he's also on lists for the Bednarik, Bronco Nagurski and Rotary Lombardi Awards.
Despite playing only nine games before suffering a season-ending injury in 2013, Hager still managed 71 tackles (46 solo, 2.5 for loss), one sack, 10 hurries, three breakups, one fumble recovery and one fumble return TD. The native of Austin is a two-time All-Big 12 honoree with 35 career games played and 19 career starts. In 2012, he led the Big 12 in tackles in 2012 with 9.5 per game.
The full Butkus Award watch list includes 51 linebackers, while Hager is just one of seven players from the Big 12 Conference on the list.
Butkus Awards are presented annually to the nation's best linebackers at the professional, collegiate and high school levels. There are 51 players named to both the collegiate and high school watch lists, honoring the now-retired professional jersey number of Dick Butkus, who is regarded as one of football's all-time best defensive players. There are also 51 members on the selection panel comprised of coaches, journalists and evaluators.
