FORT WORTH, Texas – Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III was named to the 2011 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award watch list, the Davey O’Brien Foundation announced Friday. The O’Brien is awarded to the nation’s best college quarterback.
Earlier this month, Griffin III was among 66 candidates on the 2011 preseason watch list for the Maxwell Award, which is given to the nation’s most outstanding player.
The junior Heisman candidate is coming off an impressive comeback season in 2010 in which he earned All-Big 12 honors and set or tied 27 school records as well as leading Baylor to its first bowl game in 16 seasons. Griffin III, a preseason All-America projection by Athlon Sports, is one of four Big 12 quarterbacks on The O’Brien watch list.
After a knee injury ended his 2009 season after three games, RG3 returned as a redshirt sophomore in 2010 to throw for school records of 3,501 yards and 22 touchdowns and was an honorable mention selection for Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year by the league’s coaches. The former All-American track hurdler received his undergraduate degree in political science in December 2010, is taking graduate courses and completed his fourth year of spring drills (was early enrollee in spring 2008) last April.
The Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award is presented annually to the nation’s best college quarterback and is the oldest and most prestigious national quarterback award. The O’Brien honors candidates who exemplify Davey O’Brien’s enduring character while exhibiting teamwork, sportsmanship and leadership in both academics and athletics. The O’Brien is overseen by the Davey O’Brien Foundation, which is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, and has awarded more than $825,000 in scholarships and university grants to help high school and college athletes transform leadership on the field into leadership in life.
Appearing on the watch list is not a requirement for a player to be awarded The O’Brien. Quarterbacks from all NCAA Division I FBS schools are eligible for the award until the field is narrowed down to 16 semifinalists on Monday, Oct. 24. The Foundation and the Selection Committee will announce three finalists on Monday, Nov. 21. The 2011 Davey O’Brien winner will be announced on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, Dec. 8. The 35th annual Davey O’Brien Awards Dinner will be held Feb. 20, 2012, in Fort Worth, Texas.
